In Judge Taylor's t-ourl hero this afternoon 'Mrs. Kark Kvaus ut iwv preliminary hearing on iho charK of bing her husband's lU'compHro in the kidnaping and robbt-ry of V. 1. White of i.rmilH Pass, tho rhui'Ko against nor was dismissed on a tech nical point of law sained by her attor ney, Porter J. Keff. District Attor ney Roberts inunediatoly had -Mrs. Kvans re-arresied on tho charse of larceny of White's car, and JudKe Taylor set her hearing on this charge to two weeks from today and set her bail at $500, which was furnished. The deFense created surprise wheo all the testimony of prosecution had been heard, by placing Mrs. IS vans on the stand to testify that she and Lark Kvans had been married at Ta coma eight years ago, he marrying her under an assumed name, and that they separated and were only re united a Khort lime before the rob bery of While last September. Prosecutor Roberts was caught unawares as he had thought that Mrs. Kvans would not take the stand. He claims to have ample evidence that Mr. and Mrs. Kvans were not man and wife at the time of the rob bery of White. Nothing had been in troduced at the hearing by the state's witnesses as to Mrs. Kvans having taken part in the robbery except as a witness. Attorney Noff made a molion that the case lie dismissed, citing the statute that when a woman is charg ed with a fi'lony or murder In com pany with her husband the presump tion is that the wife is under the co ercion of the hut-hand unless it is proved otherwh-.e. WHAT NEAR EAST F COMMITTEE L The question is sometimes asked, "What results are being obtained by the Near Kast Relief with the funds we are subscribing to it?" This is a most natural request, and the ordin ary person, who has net looked into it, cannot but be thrilled with the wonderful work being accomplished. They have established orphan ages in this "l,and of the Stalking Death," as it has been so aptly called, to help care for the 250, OOU home less and orphaned children in that area. They have established 14 hos pitals, with 14S.72S clinic attendants each month. They are maintaining 1 1 rescue homes, where Christian Ar menian and Syrian women and girls, released from forced bondage and degradation in Turkish harems, can be temporarily provided for. be tween 10f,000 and 200,000 are hi ill held in Turkish harems because there are insufficient funds to care for them if released! Over 7uoo tons of flour per month are being distribut ed to the starving and destitute. Wherever possible, industries are re vived, that the sufferers may work. mil help to make themselves self- supporting. In, one place, between 0,o00 and tlO.ooo refugees are con ent rated in an old military barracks. ami used on roads and other public works to help reduce tho cost of their maintenance. 13, 225 orphans in 49 of the orphanages in Russian-Armenia alone, together with the women under Near Kast care, are being used in light industrial employment which will be self-supporting as soon as e:; portatlons from tho Trans-Caucasus can commence. It is sam that x.,:yi persons were found recently omploy- d in industries maintained by the Near Kast Relief. Thesd are only some of the move important projects into which Amer ican money for Near Kast Relief are diverted. They merit your support! selected and duly o! ut'ivu.
