Si-hroeder, chief test pilot at Mc- Cook Kleld, who yesterday fell more than five miles in two minutes after shattering the. world's altitude record miraculously escaping death, lies to day in the army post hospital near here, recovering from partial blind ness, and determined to1 mako anoth er ascent Into the heavens at the first opportunity. Major Schroeder climbed yesterday to a height of Sfi.OliO feet, then plunged downward more than five miles when he lost control of hfs ma chine after his oxygen supply was ex hausted. While still 21)00 feet above the ground the aviator righted the plane and sailed down to make a graceful landing c'n McCook Kield. When attendants rushed to the machine they found him sitting erect in tho plane, blinded and unconscious His eyeballs had been frozen, the temperature at tho height to which he had ascended being 117 degrees be low zero, Fahrenheit. At the hospital last night Major Srhroeder told of the climb to heights never before attained, of his battle against cold, wind and lack of air, and of bis dutermlnatiCn to mount 40,000 feet above the ground, his ob jective when he took the air yester day. "I was thinking only of my desire to ellmb forty thousand feet when suddenly my oxygen stopped flow ing," he said. "Then, all at once, it seemed that an explosion took place inside my head. My eyes hurt sc1 that I could not open them and I knew I was falling. 1 guess 1 pulled hard on the stick, for I knew I must Btraighteu out for a glide. W. Ili.'yt and his son Arthur, came in to take part with us. Mr. Hoyt is the traveling evangelist working in the interest of tho Sab bath schools for the Presbyterian -church. I as the teacher of the Bible class, requested him to take charge of my class but he declined but after the regular exercises were over wo invited him to address the school which he did. giving us sonic very interesting suggestions. As we had no preaching appointment for that day we repaired to our homos Owing to the Inability of our regular Sunday school superintendent, Mrs. .1. I.. Robertson to attend. Mr. Carl Esch, one of our new members, who has recently bought a fine farm just below town, acted in that capacity. At night Mr. HOyt, who Is at present working in benult oi mc Armeniuun. gave a stereopticon entertainment and took up a collection for the bene fit of that down-trodden and perse cuted race of people, resulting in an offering of IS. 97 and after deducting J 1.50 to pay the express charges c'n the slides from Portland and back $7.47 cents was handed to Mrs. Hob ertson to be forwarded to the proper official of the drive. Major Schroeder took the air yes terday forenoont He climbed above the clouds, but the exhaust gas from his plane, freezing in the frigid tem perature, caused a clL:ud-like forma tion to hang in the sky. As the plane was not visible from tho earth thou sands of Dayton citizens believed it to be the tail of a comet. Some witnesses inclined to the be lief that a strange body was coming with a message from Mars. Profes sor William Heck, ustrouomer at St. Mary's cr.llege observed tho airplane thru a telescope, however. Thousands saw the machine appear a mere black speck against the sky. They saw it become larger and lar ger, leaving a long while tail In its wake as it fell. When the machine was about 2000 feet above the ground tho watchers saw the machine sud denly righted. It was at this time that .Major Schroeder pulled the con trol stick. The instruments on Major Schroe der's machine toll the story of his fight against tho elements as he climbed upward. His thermometer recorded a temperature o'f 0 7 degiees below zero. The barograph reading indicated an altitude of H7.000 feet and when calibrated by Captain Har rison V. Flick Inger. showed an offic ial altitude of 116,020 reet, a new world's record, and a variation of less than 1000 feet. pected and consequently was nut fa miliar with the accompanying expla nations. I noticed in last Sunday's .Medford Sun among other very Interesting things a poem written by H. F. Dow ell, entitled "The Old llrick House." and the reading brought vividly to my mind the scenes of my first intro duction to Oregc'n in October, A. D. 1st; 1 . and while I va in Jackson ville, then a thriving mining camp my attention was called to that brick house as being the only brivk resi dence in southern Oregon. It. was erected by Mr. Dowell's father. It. F. Dowell, Sr., who at that time was ono of the leading attorneys in the statu and while he was making his homo in Jacksonville, he spent a good part if his time in Washington, D. C. practicing law In tho supremo court. 1 well remember having my attention called to the marble mantleploce and its surroundings that was brought in from Crescent City on pack mules and the fine furniture that was also brought In from there in the same wav. And about that time was erect ed the .Methodist church that was built by donations contributed by the sporting class of the town, for while many of them were professional gam blers many of them were men of re finement and culture but hail drirted into vices so prevalent in that day. but tbev were liberal to a fault aiuM always ready to lend a helping hand to the needy. Tho surveyors working on the Crater l.ako highway between here and Prospect have finally reached our town and set the stakes for.the road between the Von der Hellen hardware store and tho Eagle Point bank. I heard Royal Hrown remark that they had been just six months surveying :!G miles of road, but perhaps they wero not all of the time running on the same route.
