opportunity.
Major Schroeder climbed yesterday
to a height of Sfi.OliO feet, then
plunged downward more than five
miles when he lost control of hfs ma

the ground the aviator righted the
plane and sailed down to make a
graceful landing c'n McCook Kield.
When attendants rushed to the
machine they found him sitting erect
in tho plane, blinded and unconscious
His eyeballs had been frozen, the
temperature at tho height to which
he had ascended being 117 degrees be
low zero, Fahrenheit.
At the hospital last night Major
Srhroeder told of the climb to heights
never before attained, of his battle
against cold, wind and lack of air,
and of bis dutermlnatiCn to mount
40,000 feet above the ground, his ob

day. "I was thinking only of my desire
to ellmb forty thousand feet when
suddenly my oxygen stopped flow

seemed that an explosion took place
inside my head. My eyes hurt sc1

Last Sunday morning Just as we
were preparing to open our Sabbath

Mr. Hoyt is the traveling evangelist

Major Schroeder took the air yes
terday forenoont He climbed above
the clouds, but the exhaust gas from
his plane, freezing in the frigid tem
perature, caused a clL:ud-like forma
tion to hang in the sky. As the plane
was not visible from tho earth thou
sands of Dayton citizens believed it
to be the tail of a comet.
Some witnesses inclined to the be
lief that a strange body was coming
with a message from Mars. Profes
sor William Heck, ustrouomer at St.
Mary's cr.llege observed tho airplane
thru a telescope, however.
Thousands saw the machine appear
a mere black speck against the sky.
They saw it become larger and lar
ger, leaving a long while tail In its
wake as it fell. When the machine
was about 2000 feet above the ground
tho watchers saw the machine sud
denly righted. It was at this time
that .Major Schroeder pulled the con
trol stick.
The instruments on Major Schroe
der's machine toll the story of his
fight against tho elements as he
climbed upward. His thermometer
recorded a temperature o'f 0 7 degiees
below zero. The barograph reading
indicated an altitude of H7.000 feet
and when calibrated by Captain Har

I noticed in last Sunday's .Medford

and the reading brought vividly to
my mind the scenes of my first intro

my attention was called to that brick

called to the marble mantleploce and
its surroundings that was brought in
from Crescent City on pack mules

when thev started to run thru a field

that is all foolishness. There is strong
