They should have thought of moderation before. There is no record of the distillers endeavoring to halt the army that tried for years to put them out of business by gulping down their output faster than they made it. i The Hun government tore oft 13 notes in 15 days, which like all notes accomplished nothing, and got no where. SAYS THE SUFFERER How often have you beard that sad . cry from tho victims ol disease. Per ' baps tlie disorder baa gone too far for help, but oftener it is just in its first stages and the pains nnd aches arc only nature's first cries for . help. Do not , despair. . Find out the cause and give nature all the help 'you can. and she will repay you with health. Look after tbe kidneys. The kidneys are the most - overworked organs of the humnnbody, and when they fail in their work of filtering and throwing oil the 'poison that constantly accumulates in the sys tem, everything goes wrong, GOLD MEDAL Haarlem. Oil Capsules will give almost immediate relief from kid ney and bladder troubles and their kin dred nilbicnte. They will free your body from pain In short order. But be sure to get GOLD MKDAL. Look for . the, name On every box.-. In three? sizes, sealed packages: 'Money refunded if tbey do not help you. . LET THE COUNTIES DECIDE. THE prejudice, against taxes is deep seated. It dates back to feudal "days ; when taxes "represented a tribute without return. And it will probably be niany generations before taxes arc regarded rationally looked upon with the toleration accorded other expenditures. A man may invest $2,000 in a motor- ertr, which costs him ten cents a mile, and is in the hospital half the time, but nine times out of ten he won't fcolnplain of the ex pense, even if he knows of it. But let that' same, man pay $50 more in taxes, and whether he &ets free use of a miljion dollar pavement or pure instead of infected water, he will yell ruin and damnation until the cows come home. This is human na ture; And while human nature changes,' it changes very, very slowly. ; . ..- All of .which makes it certain thatjhe mouey. meas ures to be voted upon at the special election will have hard sledding. There will be an initial prejudice very difficult to overcome. - . -. '' : ' .' Nevertheless most of the measures are commendable and should be passed. v .""..' The first one on the ballot, would increase. the county indebtedness from two to six per cent, for the construc tion of good roads. Without studying the questiou, . a number of people, will no doubt vote "no" on the general assumption this will increase the tax burden. ' 13ut it won't. The measure merely makes it possible for an v countv in the state to increase its indebtedness if a majority in that county so vote. Jackson county should have more money for road maintenance and construction. But if a majority of the people oppose this, the passage of this measure will have no effect in this county what ever. ' ' : fi :- ' In other words' the' amendment, merely gives each county home rule in road building, within six per cent of the county valuation . There is no valid objection to this. The measure should pass. ' , . j . While the feat of the KQ-4 naturally fills every Amer ican with pride, tho exploit of Hawker in his jump-off direct for Ireland with no navy to aid him, must be grant ed the more daring the more thrilling adventure. We trust the American navy will be among, the first to con gratulate him on his safe arrival. ' ' 1 President Wilson says the presidency is behind him, which is no doubt truej and so are the democrats. The Bolsheviki dream is nearly over, comes back, she will come back strong. -t- FOLEY S BURK ATTRACT CROWDS . The Foley, and Burk Carnival com-) pany opened- its fourth, annual ap pearance in Medford Monday night, to a good sized crowd, and will be in full swing this eVening. The carni val is clean and attractive, with the usual carnival " adjuncts. Many of the old acts are back, along with new ones. . Tho merry-go-round, the Mecca of the small boy and girl, is modern. Among the other attrac tions are the Ferris wheel, the Cir cus sideshow, the Hawaiian enter tainers, a collection of birds, doll booths, and the inevitable hambur ger stand. Unlike most carnivals the "canned" music furnished via the band organ and calliope route, is new, and not of the 1880 vintage. The carnival is located on the vacant lot near the Southern Pacific depot, and will play all week in the city. The Foley and Burk carnival has been a regular snmmer visitor to the city for the last four years.
