LET THE COUNTIES DECIDE.
THE prejudice, against taxes is deep seated. It dates

him ten cents a mile, and is in the hospital half the time,

whether he &ets free use of a miljion dollar pavement or
pure instead of infected water, he will yell ruin and

ures to be voted upon at the special election will have hard
sledding. There will be an initial prejudice very difficult

Nevertheless most of the measures are commendable

The first one on the ballot, would increase. the county
indebtedness from two to six per cent, for the construc
tion of good roads. Without studying the questiou, . a
number of people, will no doubt vote "no" on the general
assumption this will increase the tax burden. '
13ut it won't. The measure merely makes it possible
for an v countv in the state to increase its indebtedness if
a majority in that county so vote. Jackson county should
have more money for road maintenance and construction.
But if a majority of the people oppose this, the passage
of this measure will have no effect in this county what

In other words' the' amendment, merely gives each
county home rule in road building, within six per cent of
the county valuation . There is no valid objection to this.

FOLEY S BURK
ATTRACT CROWDS
. The Foley, and Burk Carnival com-)
pany opened- its fourth, annual ap
pearance in Medford Monday night,
to a good sized crowd, and will be in
full swing this eVening. The carni
val is clean and attractive, with the
usual carnival " adjuncts. Many of
the old acts are back, along with
new ones. . Tho merry-go-round, the
Mecca of the small boy and girl, is
modern. Among the other attrac
tions are the Ferris wheel, the Cir
cus sideshow, the Hawaiian enter
tainers, a collection of birds, doll
booths, and the inevitable hambur
ger stand. Unlike most carnivals
the "canned" music furnished via
the band organ and calliope route, is
new, and not of the 1880 vintage.
The carnival is located on the vacant
lot near the Southern Pacific depot,
and will play all week in the city.
The Foley and Burk carnival has
been a regular snmmer visitor to the
city for the last four years. '

FLYING CIRCUS TO
LAND GORE FIELD
The flylng.'clrcus 'will perform in
Medford on .June .8,., according to
present plans. If there should be
delay the exhibition will be on June

Arrangements were made yester
day with the visiting aviators for the
landing place on W. H. Gore's field
on the Jacksonville road. Mr. Gore
agreed to have his crop cut at once
and the field put in proper condition.

the landing place and will be in
stalled in a few days. -

land, the plan of having one valley
flight being abandoned. - -
