' P3CGE SIX HfEDFORD MATK TRIBUNE,' fEDFORD, OREOON, WEDNESDAY, 'APRTTi 2H, Iflld ' " i :' NAT L GUARD IS AUTHORIZED BY g 0 GOVERNMENT Oreoon Among First States to B Se lected Force to Consist of One Battalion Infantry, Four Companies Coast Artillery State In Imme- 1 dlate Need. WASHINGTON,' April 2fr. Reeon- : Btltution of tbe National Guard as : actually started today when the war department, thru the bureau of mili tary affairs, authorized the organ lia-J tlon of seven regiments and one extra battalion of infantry, one squadron of cavalry and 18 companies ot coast artillery. ' . . The state of Now York was author-, lied' to raise tour regiments of infan try, one squadron of cavalry and 12 companies of coast artillery. New Jersey was authorised to organise one regiment of infantry and two companies of coast artillery, Ohio two regiments of infantry and Ore gon one battalion ot infantry and four companies ot coast artillery. These new units are, Intended to replace state troops which, under sec : tlon 61 of the. national defense act,, cannot be legally maintained by the states in time of peace. . That section prohibits, tbe maintenance of any troops except those prescribed in the act regulars and National Guard. -Other authorisations tor units' are expected to follow soon.- The states first considered were those in VhlchJ conditions were such that their gov ernors considered" 'armed forces might .be necessary' underr certain contingency. The state of Pennsyl vania, tor instance, reported to the war department that it possessed' at this time a very efficient state con stabulary and S000 state troops, suf ficient to-handle .any emergency which could be foreseen at this time. -The units authorized today must be, in such state ot organization be fore June 30 as to be eligible for fed eral recognition, if the war depart ment Is to extend financial aid. , TheJ organizations will all be organized on, 'pesce status, a company consisting ot 66 men as .a minimum. - . : . ' ; . ' ' ' - ,r' v; j Portland; Apni 23. The feet that Oregon was among tbe first states In' which the organization of the National Guard units was author ized by the war department; was said by military authorities today to be chiefly: because the personate ot the units had. been practically enlisted here and' ready for federal recogni tion. Adjutant General May recently returned to Portland from a trip thru the state, completing organization of companies. - ; Another possible reason given for arly authorization in Oregon- was, that the state police, an organization under the authority of the governor during the war for use in handling uprisings ox disturbances of any kind was legislated out ot existence by the last ..legislature. , In case of distur bances due to unemployment or any other cause, it was pointed out. the state at the present time U without atate troops to deal with them. , ENIX SCHOOL TO - GIVE A flAY 'pi.. t..u.: n l. ;.'n i the school house by the .pupils under the head of the "Junior Senior Play," Thursday, April 24, 8 p. m. - "Up to Freddie." comedy in two acts.
