Worthington on the stand denied
Mitchell's story of whnt occurred in
the room and testified that he did not

as to the fate of the U-boat. :
The Stringhnm which is one of the
new' destroyers, on August 8, last,
was one of the vessels convoviw n
fleet of troop ships to Europe. When
off Ilatteras the destroyer received a
wireless call for help. The call was
in Portuguese, and, after much trou
ble, the destrover managed to get the
position of the steamer, and. detach
ing herself from tho convoy steamed
full speed to the scene of the trouble.
When the Stringhnm got within sig
naling distance of- the I'beraba. the
captain of the ship signaled that a
small craft, with a sail some miles
away was a German submarine, which
for more than two hours had been
shelling his shin. . - . j
Yesterday the Brazilian government
officially thanked the officers bt"1

ment and was presented bv Mr. Pier
hiero. the consul general of Brazil at
this port. The silk American flag,
made bv the girls of Brazil, was pre
sented bv Captain Morara of the Bra
zilian navy.

longer a deputy sheriff of Jackson
county, having resigned the office

His resignation was the direct out
come of his shooting , and ., badly
wounding Harrison RIggs, the fore
man Of the Frink orchard, a week
ago" last Monday night. It was gen
erally recognized after this sensation
al episode that In view of the state of
public opinion McDonald s usefulness
as an officer In Jackson county was
at an end. . It was also feared that
after the shooting attempts by Mc
Donald to make arrests for speeding,
bootlegging or other offenses would
meet with resistance and might be
fraught with tragic results.
' It Is known that this was the view
of -County Prosecutor Roberts, the
county court and Sheriff Terrlll, and
that If McDonald did not resign his
resignation would be forced. Mc
Donald's relatives also strongly coun
seled the young man to resign and
give up the police business altogeth
er. McDonald was for a time obdur
. ate in his Intention to remain on the
Job, as he declared that he feared no
one and disliked to be put in the atti
tude of running away.
" But he returned the middle of last
week from Trail wherq he had been
visiting his parents, and after a con
ference with the couhty authorities
finally banded in his resignation and
departed for Portland.. He had not
