TWO RAILROADS TtT BE OPERATED ON DOUBLE TRACK SAN FRANCISCO., Oct. 28. Iii or der to most efficiently oncnite the Southern Pacific 'and Western Pacif ic railroads -under federal control plans have been uiado and will become effective in a few days for oneratiutr lilies of, the two systems as a double track, lor about 182 miles in Nevada where' the roads arc close together. Affording to Federal Manager W. K. Scott, final plans for construction vt 11 cross over, tracks ind one water station have been agreed upon thij work to cost approximately $118. U00. Connecting tracks have been cpnstrucfed at Vi'cseo. two miles east of'Winnemucca and Alttzou, four miles west of Wells. ' When the new plan becomes effec tive. nlK-eastward trains will move over Western Pacific, : tracks, and western trains over Southern Pacific trucks. .'.:,:. This does not. mean, as seems to, be the iniprcssion-bv some, that ali traf fic cast, or westbound between Suit l.nkc or Ouden nnd. San Kram'isco will be handled hv the Southern Pa cific or Western Pacific. Holh rouds will retain their identity and will han dle only their own trains. The only points where the two roads will con solidate are those mentioned above, and the only purpose of so conibin iiur is to train speed aud eliminate waitiuir trrtnectins points. Out-idc of the .section between Wesco and Aia zui. each road will handle its own lreiaht nnd nassenser trains as here tofore.. That is, both the Western Pacific and the Southern Pacific will nrrv passcnirers and freight into Sari ' Francisco nnd into Salt Lake and Osrden over their own tracks, as thev have always done. Such an arranuemcnt is only car rying. out. the plan that was worked out by the officers of both roads be fore the "Western Pacific went into the hands of a receiver. As far as conditions will permit one station in n town will be used fur both roads. At Carlin arrangements are beiai: made so that trains of both lines will pass through the Southern Pa cific yards nnd at Klko throiiL'h the Western Pacific; yards. At Carlin the Southern. Pacific station will lie used by both lines and at Klko the Western Pacific station. Schedules as to train times arc now being worked out and will be shortly nnnonnced. ORKCIOS AGHkTIrt:iiAI. AND MRS. .lOIIN BALLAD AND HHOTHKHS. The fall ceremonial as planned by HiUah Temple of Mystic Shriners, which was to have been held in Ma sonic hall In this city, on Friday, Nov. 1, has been Indefinitely post poned, due to the universal ban on public guthorlngs prevailing during these days of epidemic contingencies. The business houses of Ashland for sometime past have been consid ering an earlier closing movement. Originally the plan was to close at 5 p. m., Instead of 6 as at present, tbis schedule to be in force on all week (lays except Saturday. A compromise seems to have beon effected on the basis of 5:30 instead of 6, but the ac tion la not yet unanimous, certain merchants declining to enter the pact. As a result some have an nounced the 5:30 closing hour, ac tion by others awaiting develop ments. Mrs. n. II. Hatch has disposed ot her faithful old horse. "Ginger," which Is 27 years old and has been In the family 13 years. Sheer inabil ity to care tor him was tho sole cause for the disposal, and in parting with the familiar old animal, whose new owner Is Mrs. Laura Ranger, it was incorporated in the bond that "Cln-i ger" be well cared for the remainder ot his days. , Local friends of the normal school movement are pleased to learn that the Portland chamber of commerce, which has been Investigating the merits of tho various measures on the ballot at the approaching gen eral election, has passed favorably upon five of them, the normal school proposition, as affecting southern and eastern Oregon, being one of the series. Tbis action is important and far-reaching, inasmuch as by such a recommendation the project is re ceiving direct encouragement in an advisory capacity at the hands of a leading organization representing all the progressive elements In that me tropolis. The executive committee of the state federation of Women's clubs also endorses the normal school measure unqualifiedly, and as the meeting of this 'board will not be held until after the election, its officers anticipated prompt acti"u in the Ir.atter by securing a friendly expres sion thru the agency of the mail from various officials and leading mem bers of the federation. , It is perhaps well to identify the response to a phone call, even if this admonition is not Incorporated in the exchange directory., Instance: Pater, delayed during noon hour M local tailor shop, phones mator, "Can't get breechoe; -won't be home to dinner till after I,'1 To which the response was, in a reproachful and subdued feminine voice, "You must have got ten tho wrong number." Tho O. II. Johnson family have lately removed into their - elegant home, -tho former Turner httngalow nortb Main street. The D. M. Watt family, recent tenants of the property, have removed to Phoenix. Mr. and Mrs. Ilurbaker and two children, from Idaho, arrived hero last week in the fumtly ear, and have been stopping in Ashland transiently on a prospecting tour- the objective point of which Is a California destin ation. Miss Cora Divct, employed at tno First National bank, contemplates entering the government service at Washington, a position there having recently been offered her. Rev. W. L. The State Teachers association will meet In Portland, Dee. 26-28. the dates being fixed by medium of a questionnaire submitted to the school superintendents thruout the state, this method being the popular form of expression nawdays. The organization is reaching colossal pro portions, 3000 members being en rolled, of which number from 12 oil to 1500 usually attend. Dean 11. I). Sheldon, of the state university, is president, and Dean E. D. Ressler, of the stnte agricultural college, Is secretary-treasurer. The formal pro gram will be available early In De cember. Supt. fi. A second edition of apple blossoms for the season is putting in an ap pearance in various local gardens notably on the Wilbur Holmes prem ises on High street, at present occu- nied by .1. K. Plttenger. Now that tho fourth liberty loan ib over with, posters referring to tlo tation are being removed from local illsnlav windows, but tho removal procees Is not thoro onoiigli. in eer- tain windows pictorial sheets yet re main as reminders of the first loan, not to mention succeeding ones. This multiplicity Is bewildering, and an appeul from state headquarters has been made to have the sweep made clean, In order that these old remin ders may not conflict with the pictor ial messages which will herald the upproachof the fifth loan. Many of the posters are works ot act, and a collection of them should be filed, In the city library as mementoes of the billion dollar scale by which the government of the present genera tion was ena-'Jlcd to back up Its war preparations. we! of section JU, town-hip J,. rauue 2 west, eontainintr Hit acres John Ju-lu- to R.
