Alv SUPPORTING TEE PRESIDENT, t TIII'j president, is rifrlit in askinjf t lit "leelinn ifa deino eratic enngress to siipniirt his adiniii'sniUii-n and eiiiict Ins nolieifs, rijrlit in seeking unity ralher than di vision in government aiTairs at a time of national crisis. Every vital measure of the war has originated willi the president. Countess lias noj denioissl r;;twl much ca pacity or resource, and has enacted his prcrain. fre quently in tardy fashion, because popular opinion over wlielininp;ly .supported the president and condemned the peanut politics played by th? politicians For personal or partisan advantage. Will H. Hays, who made such a success in colouring Indiana with negro voters from the soulh for the repub licans in .191(5 that they elected him national chairman, has been busy trying to elect a republican congress on the grounds that the republican party is a war party. So is the democratic parly. So is the prohibition party. The. war is not the private property of any one party, but of all. .All patriots are partisons of Tho war regardless of the parly label. No parly has a monopoly of patriotism mid '.-o party can lie TWO war party. But Mr. Hays and his politicians' con: t rue! ivc efforts to win the war consist in criticism of the president and of the administration not for the things they have done, but. for the manner in which they are done, and for not doing 1 lie in faster. Quibbling, fault- hiding r-.nd scolding is not going to win the war even though it may aid hi getting the hungry to the pie counter. The president has given the best reason in the world why a democratic congress should be elected because such a congress is forced to enact his measures and sup port the administration, because divided control in gov ernmental as in personal affairs, spells division and dis cord and because the election of a republican congress would be considered abroad as a popular repudiation of the president and his war policies. These are reasons enough for the election of a congress that will support, and assist the president in winning the war rather than in one that will hamstring him for petty political profit.
