CASUALTIES. THIS cnsiiiilty lists ore coining in.. Considered as a whole, and' in nronoi'l ion to vit'lorv. tliov are not had. Unt considered individually, each name set down there hriiiK's inlo sonic AnicriCiin home apportion of the great world agony. Parents, lliiiiking backward from the grief of today, say to each other, "Only yesterday, it seems, we were buy ing playthings for his baby hands!" Anil rebellious hearts (iiestion (lot! himself, "Was there no better use for those hands, grown big and strong? Why? Why?" A new and true atrocity story tells why lie had to go ovei'seas to fight, to die. In the first month after the (lernians took possession of northern Franco, a group of little children were playing in the street. The Hun-fiends threw some bundles wrap ped like toys among Hieni. And the children scrambled for tlicni. The "playthings" were bombs which exploded as the children, laughing, snatched tit them. Some of "les pelites" were killed. And t hose that lived will never play with to is again for they have lost their hands. (It is a comfort to know that many of these children are now sup ported by American funds.) In France, in Serbia, in Rumania and other enemy countries, (leinian aviators dropped candy in the streets of the villages, poisoned wit h cholera and other deadly germs, so that childish hands would find them, and start epi demics of disease. Fiends wjio can contrive such .jokes can never be made over. Thev must be wiped from the fact of the earth. The hoys numbered on the casualty lists have done their part to stamp them out. Their short .so!dier-lives have "counted" in the noblest cause man ever fought for. Mourn for them? McCurdy Agency fioneral Insurance Medford National Bank Bldg. Telephone 123. 400 VICTIMS OF U-BOAT RAISED LONDON, Aug. 3.- Not nil the ships which German torpedoes and marine collisions send to tho bottom of the sea stay there. In less than three years more than 400 sunken merchant vessels have been restored to service. And more thnn one ship has been raised, ropalred, sent forth on a now career, and then sunk and Talsed anew for a third lease on life. This rescue work is done by the salvage section of the British navy. lief ore the war no one thought of at tempting to save such wrecks as are now brought up from the depths, but ships now are priceless. The finan cial value of the salvage work is enormous. The cargoes salved aro themselves worth many millions, of dollars. Recently a big American tanker collided on a dark night in the Eng lish Channel with a sturdy British standard ship carrying oil.' Thoro was an explosion of benzine, and both vessels wero quickly swept by flames. Of the crow of tho British ship only eight men, who Jumped overboard, wero saved. Salvage work on both ships began with the arrival of tugs which, after overcoming many difficulties, man aged to tow them closo in shore. There it was necessary to sink them by gunfire. They are now being brought to the surface, a long, ard uous task. The tanker, a fine vessel some 500 feet long and new built, had on board 10,000 tons of oil, and, tho she blazed for four days, half of the cargo was salved. When thoroughly repaired, tho tanker will bo returned to the United States, not much worse for wear, tho damago being estimated at $750,000 a small amount figuring In tbeso days when persons think In millions. THE CASE SIX ' Tho Case Six horoloforo has been very little beforo tho public duo to tho fact of the Caso peoplo placing their cars with tholr Implement dealers, who In most instances con sidered nu atitomobilo n stdo Hue and did not put the car beforo the public, Tho new Case Six attracted sc much fnvorablo comment that tho liveliest and most progressive dealers In tho country literally burglarized tho old dealers and consequently tho car is now without doubt tho most talked of automobile in America to day. In Portland, Oregon Mr. J. It. Gra ham whoso meteoric rise In the nuto nioblle business has placed him as ono of the leading dcalors In the state, took over tho Caso line and In tho short space of llmo ho has dis tributed tho car has led all makes in this class In number of sales. Tho Caso car lias wonderful linos and tho ear being tlrivcir In this state by Claud Sflles, formerly of Medford, Is painted a beautiful buff color and anyono with an eye to tho artistic will tako more than the second look. A noteworthy real aro is tho absence of the usual gingerbread panels, etc., usually so prominent In the car of to day, something to catch tho eye of tho gulllblo buyer; Rtead of this camouflage the trim flowing lines, wonderful paint Job, and luxury of Inside appointments appeals to the eye In the same manner and contrast as would a neatly tailored person wearing good plain materials as ngimist the Ninas treo effect In ap parel, if appearanco and perfor mance count for anything tho car will be the most popular car ever In troduced in southern Oregon and the denier w ho happens to land tho Case contract will Indeed be fortunate.
