MTCDFORD MATL TRTT1JNTI, MKUFOUD,. OREGON", VIM DAY, .JULY 1!)1K PAGE THREE Fi "TO FIX PRICES ON FOOD STAPLES The first of the weekly price lists of food commodities will he published next week h.v the Jackson County I'riee Interpretiti" lionnl which is just heimf oriinied and uf whiidt Howies Mooru, ussjstant county food admin istration, representing the govern ment, is chairman. Like similar rom iiiittes in every conntv in the Tniled States, the local committee will meet n! least once a week and decide what j fair retail prices should he paid fori food staples by the consumers. . The purpose of the hoard is set forth by Chairman Moore in the t'ol liiwin;r co iiniunication which has been mailed to each grocer in Jack- son county: I As a war measure, the .yovcrnment has inau:ir"ted a nation-wide sys tem of puhlihin in the newspapers weekly what it deems to he a fair prici! for consumers to y,v during each week for certain staple 'foods. Having been selected as chairman of the committee which is to handle this work in Jackson eounty, my first ac tion is to take this matter up with the retail grocers, and to ask their co-operation in the work. I believe that when the dealers become famil iar with the food administration's plants they will not only approve of the plan, but will beartilv assist in the work of making it really effec tive as a beneficial war measure. I desire to state at the very outset that the words, "fair price mean that the irice is to he fair to the merchant a well us to the consumer, and to assure you that this idea will be kept constantly in mind by the committee. The prices to be published by the jov crnmcnl are not nrlntrary maximums in dollars and cents fixed without regard to the fair product the mer chant is entitled to or to local condi tions affectiu -the prices be must pay for his j:ood, hut are estimated on percent aves, based upon the ac tual cost of the articles to the re tailers. The puhli-hed prices arc merely suestive of what the selling prices reasonably ouht to be on the average. Kor the proper performance of the duties of , the committee, it i,s ncccs-1 SHi'v lo have the assistance of thej wholesale and retail grocery trade;: moreover, I consider it only fair that the dealers should have actual repre sentation on this committee. I there-J fore have requested the Ja-ksoiiJ County Business Men's association 1 ami the Ashland Hiisiness Men's as-1 social ion to select one retail nicer, each, and one wholesale grocer to bcrve on the committee. I shall se lect two member to represent the consumers.. The committee will meet at least weekly, and from the data obtained from the merchants' repre Hentatives and from the list of per centages furnished by the food ad ministration, ascertain the prices at which certain' prescribed staples oiuiht to seel that week. These prices -will be published in the news papers of the county. Thtse prices lire the maxim tun the consumer should pav; then- is no objection to dealers selling at lower prices. This action is not directed '.. the food situation in Jackson county :r any other county in particular, but to cover every county in the I'ti'.ei. States. In the a.ujiroijatc th reMilIs will be wholesome and will not only protect the people, especially in the more congested districts, but will tend to make it possible for Hiem to live comfortably at a lair cost and (hit be able to contribute more liberally to the government's financial m-ei1. In this way, the work directly assis; the jrovemmcnt in its business of winniiiir the war. The committee does not claim to be infallible, and it will welcome nili-ei-ms and suggestions from b.dlf con sumers and mer-hanis. If errors ire made, be assured that if they arV brought to my attention they will promptly he investigated and if cor rections are necessary, they will be made at once.
