Details of the de.-il ruction of one of Hie largest Ger man submarines uro given in a dis patch from a neutral correspondent. This submarine was one of the lust to leave Zeebrugge before the en trance to llio harbor was blockaded by Hritish forces. Tile U-Boat struck a mine and out of the crew of 40, only two survived on reaching the surface after a strug gle with death for un hour and u half. 20 fathoms below the surface. Some of the crew committed suicide, having lost all hope of leaving the boat alive. The only chance of esenpirif; was, to force open the coanine tower and the forward hatches and trust to. the compression of air in one part of. the vessel to iorco each man, like a tor pedo, to the surface. The air prcs sure in the submarine had become so high most of the crew could not keep their mouths closed. . The compressed air shot them to the' surface and hardly bud they reached tho sea level when tho nir pressure burst their lungs, und about 20 of them sank like stones. The survivors described the yells of the men, when the end came, as the most horrible noise thev ever had heard. The attention of a British trawler was attracted and it hastened to the rescue. The conditions of the survi vors showed that their experience had rn of a dreadful character. "EFUSE APPROVAL OF EXPRESS CONSOLIDATION WASHINGTON, June 18. The suc cess of the Italians two weeks ago In tho mountainous country to tho west I of Lake Gqrda and tho evident con t cern of the Austrian command over an advance thero may Indicate that If the Italians strlko back It may bo along this part of the front. . A suc- coss thcro would isolate tho Austrian forces fighting east- of Luko Garda and turji the right flank ot tho enemy armies. , Prisoners taken by tho Italians, French and British'now total flvo thousand. Tho latest report from Vienna makes claim of no marked gains ex cept the capture of Capo Silo on the wost bank of the Plavo south of Fos salta. Tho number of prisoners Is now reported as 12,000. Emperor Charles is reported to be in tlio Trentlno directing tho offen sive On Western Front Kvents of importance may be tak ing Bhapo in tho Sommo buttlefield. Heavy firing by tho German artillery In the Ancro valley and northward to Serro. is roported by the British. It is on this part of tho front that a Gorman 'attack has boon expected by the allies and tho German bombard ardmeat may be tho prelude of a r sumpllon of tlio enemy's offensive In France. American positions northwest of Chateau Thlnrry aro being bombard ed heavily with gas shells and thero aro Indications that tho enomy may again try to drive tho Americans from wood and other territory recent ly gained. The enomy artillery flro also has Increased along the Marne east of Chateau Thierry but thero has been no Infantry activities.
