BOSWELL MINE AT SUCKER CREEK Alining mem In southern Oregon are greatly interested in the report ot the Immense richness of tho llos- well gold quartz mlno on Sucker creek about Blx miles from Holland In Josephine county. If Is predicted that this property will prove to be one of the richest ever known In southern Oregon. The mine Is only parllally devol oped. It is owned by It. Hoswoll former well known sidewalk con tractor of this city. Tho mine Is of porphyrltic construction. One slory of its richness, tlio truth of which Is vouched for by a well known .Med lord man who saw tho oro, Is that recently out of 4 0 pounds of the oro gold was extracted ainoiiiilliiR in val ue to $900. Tho oro Is two-thirds gold. I lie property was until recently In litigation for three years, hut the doclnlon of tho courts gave Mr. Hiin well a clear title. With his wife and Bon Mr. Doswoll has been at work developing the mine for n long time. Tho drift ho has been working, on la only In about 30 feet. A Huntington mill was recently Installed at tho mlno, and only liwt week a gas engine to npnrnto the mill was set tip. When this modern machinery gets to work, It Is pre dicted Hint the mlno will produce wonderful results. It is said that today Mr. Iloswell could disposo or tho mlno for ISIiO, 000 Just as it Is, and that possibly n million or more will bo taken out If the richness ot the lead so far tapped in tho short drift halils out. Mr. Boswell's many Medford friends are pleased at his good fortune A number of Medford men have large placer holdings near the Bos well mine. COUNCIL TRANSACTS LITTLE BUSINESS TUESDAY SESSION Aside from tho appointment of Eugene Amann to tho city police force to take the place of Officer Wil liam Crawford, resigned, thero was little business transacted at tho regu lar meeting of the, city council Tues day night. Soino time was con sumed discussing the licenses of jit neys for tho Ashland Round fp, it finally being decided to rhargo the motor trucks with freight licenses, $2.60 per day and compel the giving of a cash bond, the t hl.-f rf police br ing authorized to attend to the mat ter. Regular licensed Jitney operators were allowed to put on extra cars In payment of l a day licence fee anil new cars unlicensed will be charged $."i per day, or $10 for the three days. It was arranged with 1-Mli-r llmth ers to fix up tho flumes on the , ranch and thus protect the city water right, and the. matter regarding sup plying city water to those outside or the city wan referred In the water committee. Colonel Howard Hanson, originator of tho Hanson plan of refinancing the city talked at length regarding the financial outlook of the city and nincy a number of recommendations and suggestions. Ilecause of the two bil lion dollar Liberty loan and the pros pect of tho government borrowing an averago of a billion dollars a month during tho duration of the war, he norlarod tho market for municipal bonds had been depressed ami advis ed offering for sale, only such bond as aro needed to take care of the moneys advanced by the city. The council took no action In this matter last night and prohahly no action will be taken until the .vl ion of the mipicnie court has Nm re colved. Councilman Keeno who came to tho council meeting late, favored giving the banks of the city oppor tunity to aid in financing the i Ity by taking up a block of the refunding bonds. RUSSIA RECOVERS U first tin Kus.si.in liKiiijik struck ham when lie was J- a slave, lie will strike twice as hard jkw that lie is free." This assert ion was made at the recent congress of peas ants in I'et rograd by a soldier delegate, ami events seem to he hearing it out. (icneral ISriisiloff recently remarked: "The liiissiun tinny has heen sick, hut is now convalescent." Since then it lias apparently completely recovered from the re cent indisposition. There are many similarities between the' present. LJ us sian army and that of J'Yance during the revolution dis cipline is exercised from beneath instead of from above, by committees of soldiers rather than by officers only. J n brief, what the army lacks in discipline is move than made up by enthusiasm. f the Jviissiau soldiers are anything like as enthusiastic for democracy as the French revolutionists wore, no force in the world can defeat them if they arc properly muni tioned and equipped. The French revolutionists defeated the world in arms a world fighting, as Uussia's enemies are fighting, at the behest of autocracy. The one is in spired by the vision of brotherhood but what, is there about, a monarch's command to inspire sacrifice? Russians have behaved extremely well thus far in the revolution, which is working an organic change in the life of the nal ion and of the world with a minimum of disturb ance and hlootlslied. .u matter what the outcome, the con dition of Russia will be improved over the past. The scarcity of 1'nited Stiites fla-;s which was apparent when the American troops fii-st lauded a week ux, was remedied by sending to Paris for quantities of the Stars mid Stripes and the seaport uwoke under the first cloudless skies for n week, rmlianl with hunting. The townspeople took a sort of holiday, though they did not close their stores, which these days are such an unusual source of ineonie wilh the thousands of new custom ers. Such Ainerivan soldiers and sailors as were allowed liberty, num bering into the thousands, were made welcome everywhere. Countless fam ilies gave little dinner parties to lonesome stranger soldiers from the 1'nited Stales. At. the Hiiut where Ibe troops are sfatioucd the day was spent in relax ation from drills. liaseball games were played and athletics and sports of all kinds were indulged in by the Americans. It deflocts incoming cablegrams at New York to Washington, where they are censored and turned over to rep resentatives of tho press associations and newspapers to whose New York offices they are addressed. Tho As sociated Press accounts of tho Kourth of July celebration in Paris wero among tho dispatches thus deflected and delayed. Secretary Baker In a statement last night said the present arrangement is temporary and would be main tallied "only so long as is necessary to perfect a smooth-working plan to handlo this matter without imperil ing the lives of American citizens." Sir. Baker has made no effort to find legal authority for tho establish ment of a new censorship, he says, and does not Intend to ask for legis lation in that regard.
