F. Goodrich Rubber company, recalls the fact that during J 915 and 101G at least forty-two oth er cars have been wor nout in this service. The firBt cost of these cars is com paratively email for the upkeep as they bound over the roughest roads of the United States day in and day out far exceeds the original purchase price. In thiB cost, of course, must he figured the same items that the motorist pays, for even tho these cars are testing tires, this particular item or upkeep fur exceeds that of the av erage motor car used In continuous service. In fact the tire cost to the Goodrich company is much above that of tho motorist, for many of the tires are nover worn out. During 1917 the Goodrich company is using nearly twice as many cars as they utilized in this service during the two previous years and the result Is that instead of confining the tests to only certain parts of the country, the entire United States is being covered by six different fleets, with the bases from which they operate scattered among as many large cities where road conditions vary so much. Automobile Notes Tills country today is prosperous. It can be kept so notwithstanding the war. It Is absolutely up to the people. If they shall go on buying and selling and producing, the nation will become financially stronger notwithstanding thjj war. But if we shall confuse waste prevention with false economy. If we become a nation of hoarders in stead of a nation of sensible and pro gressive business people from the home to the largest corporation in the land, then we will soon produce stag nation. That would be the entering wedge for German victory. There is nothing we could do that would so plenso our enemies or endanger our national existence. The National Automobile Dealers association is now the name of a new organization now being formed in the United States, In which eventually all local dealers' associations will be af filiated. A general organization com mittee was named during the recent meeting for the discussion of the 5 per cent tax and this committee has called for a delegate from each local organization to attend a meeting which will Be held in Chicago within the next sixty days. Allan T. Bedell, holder of World's Twenty-four Hours Motorcycles rec ord, succeeded in annexing a still blg gor record, June 13, when, on a Good rich Safety Tread equipped motorcy cle, ho traveled from Los Angeles to Now York in five days, seven hours, forty-six minutes actual riding time. Tire and several auto prices may advance July 1st. Better get yours now. There have been 1175 Maxwell cars delivered In Oregon since Aug. 10 and there are now 108 more in transit to the dealers In the state, making a to tal of 1283 cars. A. W. Walker ranks third in the sale of Maxwells, having received 93 during this time. He Is excelled only by the Portland and Sa lem agents. SEE CRATER LAKE Now is Uie best time to prepare for your trip to Crater l.ako in August with the Oregon State Motor associa tion. The wise tourist will get much more enpoyment out of tbe trip If he plans his schedule and selects his par ty now. Jt is not necessary to plan the little details tho touring committee will take care of them. Just prepare your self by studying the maps, reading about the country, and gaining some knowledge of Its early hiBtory. The more you read about the ivalloys, the lakes of central Oregon, Crater Lake itself, the Rogue and Umpqua valleys the better you will enjoy seeing them. It is so delightful to feel that you know beforehand something of the places to be visited. One always lets ones' imagination play as it will. But this is one country this Oregon that does not disappoint you, no mat ter how extreme your Imagination is. A. L. Parkhurst has left for Crater Lake to open' the lodge and prepare for the summer tourists. lie will pay particular attention to the automo bile club party from Portland, and has reserved dates for them. The night stops along the road aro being ar ranged by W. J. Clemens, chairman of the committee. He is planning for the party to make a stop between The Dalles and Bend. There Is no suitable hotel or roadside inn, and the dis tance 175 miles is too great for many, to make in one day, especially as the Deschutes canyon Is so beauti ful that It is worthy of study. Port land Spectator. INVALUABLE AID "The Tracford auto attachment points the only practical way to the solution of the new cultivation de manded by the present war condi tions," said A. W. Walker, local agent for the Trackford, who has received a carload of these useful auto attachments. "There is no question but the trac tor manufacturers are up to the limit of their production now, and while new tractor and motor concerns are being daily incorporated they have all to go thru several years of field tests and perfecting organization before they will have any serious effect on tractor shortage. "This narrows the field to power plants now available and when one considers the Innumerable number of Maxwell cars all over the country and the fact that in a few hours a car can be converted by the Trackford into a practical farm tractor capable of plowing four acres a day, cultivating from twenty to twenty-flvo or pulling five tons of freight along the high way; It means that the government has access to a potential tractor sup ply fully capable of accomplishing all new cultivation necessary.
