They have been eiven a thornneh test by the chief mechanic In charge of the machines at the aviation school at San Diego and he has requested that the war department give these rings a thorough test at all their sta tions, claiming that the Increased compression enables the airplanes to climb faster and work better at high elevations. The Bailey Aeroplane comnanv of Los Angeles hearing of the success of the local rings at the government sta tion has ordered rings for an airplane they expect to enter in the coast to coast race in September. The Medford Red Cross chapter is richer by between $300 and 1400 through last night's benefit given for the chapter by the Medford lodge of Elks. The exact sum realized will not be known for a day or two yet when all tickets that were In hands of in dividuals for sale are accounted for. The benefit was a brilliant success in every way. Fully 300 persons made merry in the Elks' club house, includ ing visitors from all parts of the val ley. All evening long automobiles were parked for blocks on the streets about the club house. All classes of society were well represented. Naturally tbe largest oortion nt the assemblage crowded into the big ball room, where all evening up until mid night two hundred couples enioved the dancing, music for which was fur nished by Hazelrlg's orchestra. A pleasing feature of the occasion was the luncheon which was served on the serve-yourself plan. The eata bles and refreshments were nrovidprf for by (he Elks' ladies with Mrs. R. J Conroy In charge. About J78 was realized from his source. The lunches which were wrapped in individual pacKages. each containlnr sandwich es, cake, pickles, etc., were sold at 23c eacn. and included coffee and ice cream. The diners, after obtaining their lunches and drinkables then seated themselves at loner hannuet tables spread in the basement. DIED NYGREN Funeral services with the Woodmen of the World In charge were held over the late Gustav Ny gren of Brownsboro at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the grave in the Brownsboro cemetery, the funeral party having departed from Perl's chapel in Medford at 1 o'clock. Mr. Nygren. who was 61 years old. died at the Granite City hospital in Ashland Sunday morning. May 6, from an op- operatlon for gall stones. He is sur vived by a wife and five children: Eric C, Frank G., Carl W., and Alice and Anna. Mr. Nygren, who was a native of Sweden, had resided In Jackson county since 1906. Riverside, May 7 of pneumonia, aged 67 years. month and 4 das. She was a na tive of Illinois and had resided In .Medford since 1901. She is survived by her husband, John W. Kinney, and one son. William T. The funeral services will be held Wednesday fore noon at the grave.
