March 9. The first state highway work, when money from the J 15,000,000 bond issue becomes available In July, will be in northern California. This assurance has been given ltobert O. ilonnell, secretary manager of tho Northern California Counties' Association, by Highway Commissioner Charles F. Stern. Tho commission realizes, Stern says, that highways are more vitally needed in northern California than in other sections of the state and work will bo started at the earliest posslhlo moment, lint two and one third per cent of tho work promised In division 2, comprising northern California, has been completed. Although the hulk of the construc tion must wait until July, the com mission plans to complete the main north and south highway at once. The state board of control has agreed to turn over $3,000,000 to tho high way commission In April, and Divis ion FiiKineer T. 1'. lledford of IJnns niiilr has been authorized to let con tracts for building the link from Sims to the Shasta-Siskiyou county line as soon as rights of way have been ?e cured. April. One or the most Important roads to bo built in northern Callofrn'.a this year is that from itedding to Weavcr ville, work on which will siart in July. The survey of this road Is prac tically completed, stato engineer? having been at work on it for the past several months. While the road will be built only to W'oavervillo at present, tho stato highway commis sion has promised that under the $1a,000,000 issue a road will he con structed from Weaverville to the Humboldt county line, thus giving northern California a direct outlet to tho sea. Work on the lted-Hlufr-Susanville and Iteddlng-Alturas laterals will al so be resumed in July. COMMUNICATION. The Chronicle publishes today details, based on "Information from un aptiarently authentic source'' of a plan of the Hill railroad lines to enter San Francisco by way of Eureka. "Corroboration of this information has been secured" the Chronicle will say, "disclosing negotiations for a trackage agreement by which I fill would assume one-thlro df the cost of the Kureku-San Francisco lino of the Northwestern Pacific which was built jointly by tho Southern Pacific and Santa Fe." ' Tho plan, according to the Chron icle, provides for tho construction of a lino 'by the Hill interests from Iiend, Ore., to Trinidad, a fow miles nortli of Eureka, whore a junction will ho mado with the Northwestern 'aciflc's through line to Sausallto. Tho Southern Pacific, according to tho Chronicle's information, will build a connection between Trinidad and "Marshfleld and a detour and tunnel will be constructed to avoid tho present steep grade ovor tho Wil- lits hill. Louis Hill, president of the Hill lines, is said to have worked out the details during a recent trip over the proposed route.
