Duryea, formerly secretary of the Ashland Commercial club, but non executive secretary of tho Mollne, 111., Commercial Club and appeared in The Road Manor of Moliue: . T The Pacific highway Is a great In-1 Jornntlonal highway from Hrllish Co-1 lumbiu to the Mexican border, passing j through the coast states of Washing-j ton, Oregon and California. To it might i bo well applied the advertising slogan j of tho Kreat railroad system that parnl- i lela it for hundreds of miles; it is in-j deed a "road of a thousand wonders!" j Iut only does this highway traverse a country rich In scenic, beauty, but ' lediug from it aro roads of the most : inaRuificaut scenic attractions of the. United States. 1 Tho touring motorist will find much ' to interest him as ho journeys over j this main artery of travel up aud duwn the western part of the United Stales.! for it will lead him through fruitful , valleys and thriving towns, along peaceful rivers and mountain torrents, -through shadowy' forests and over mountain tops and close to snow-clad ! peaks. Like the kaleidoscope of his ' boyhood days, each turn will bring before him a new combination in tree, j andfield and sky that makes a picture Jonff to be remembered. ' One of the most beautiful and won-' fill Btretches of the Pacific highway isl that from Hertford, in tho lovely ! Hogue Hiver valley of southern Ore-; Ron, to liornbrook, California, cross ing the summit of the Siskiyou moun tains. Not only Is this stretch of the highway wonderful from a scenic standpoint!, It is even more remarkable! as a piece of splendid engineering in road construction. I . The old journey over the Siskiyous, j on what was known as the Dollavhide j toll road, was one of discomfort, as well as danger. It was a "rough and t rugged road," with grades as high as I UO per cent, that taxed the best of ma- j chines. Seven grade crossings' ov er j the Southern Pacific railway made it dangerous, for at all of them tho grade on rail and road was heavy. The new ' road, laid out in masterly fashion from iitf northern slope of the SlsUlyous to the California line by Frank A. Kltt- redge, the engineer in charge of con struction for the Oregon stale highway; commission, has no grade crossing, and j its maximum grade is 6 per cent. The I Southern Pacific tracks are crossed , hilt twice on the journey to the summit from Ashland, and in each instance the NEW ROAD IN JACKSON OF RARE BEAUTY iegg; l23 tho summit, fnoliiM Himlhwiinl. a tu rnout tifvotul (tosorlpilim.
