MEDFOTCT) MEDFORD, OTJF.flOX. MONDAY. MAPCH 1917 PACE ETiKVEX PLACE OF HONOR CAR SITUATION A A METZ WINS THE FOR OVERLAND The Willys-Overland starter in a lu cent Issue says: 'ln the recent automobile show at Chicago the newspapers stated that In mvardini; space in tho building the company receiving the posh Ion of HARDSHIP The present condition existing re garding freight ear equinuiont for shipping autonioliiles to tho Pacific coast is one of the worst tho dealers have had to contend with in years, says J. C. Powers ltuick local dealer. On his triii east u week uiro ho found honor was the ono whose 'volunio of ionnrliiini, ti,o,. .. i.,,,i husiuess during the proceeding 1:! niontlis had surpassed that of all Its exhibiting competitora and that was tho Willys-Overland conipauy. Tho po ultlon of honor at the Now York show was also given to tills company. "That model of efficiency, the beau tiful Willys-Knight Might chassis, was oao of the most widely discussed ex hibits. Even tho layman of most tin mecbauical turn of niiiiil could readily understand by a study of tins chassis the principle of the sleeve-valvo motor uti$ lis advantages. The cut-away chassis with the assistance of care fully arranged lights makes every working part of the motor open to public inspection. - "Tho new Country Club proved just Vas popular in its class. That a car of tho Country Club's snappy lines, with wire wheels, real seating comfort and high grade finish can be sold at a Country Club's price, was a revelation. "The Willys-Overlaud's newest five passenner four-cylinder car tho Light Kour and Ihe other models wero all popular In the big display." lllllner is county agent for these cars. . MAXWELL RECORD IN WEST For endurance running reliability in the mountain countries df the far west the Maxwell holds practically all the best records that have been made bo far. Driving a stock Maxwell roadster, Hixy F. McKamera established a record fnfe Spokane to Seattle last August that still holds as the best, though several cars have put to the run in efforts to lower the time. The Max well got over tho distance between the two cities in eleven hours and fifly-throo minutes. This beat the fastest trains by moro than an hour ami It took six hours oft! the beat plu vious autnmobile records. Tho second best time, made in an effort to beat tho Maxwell, required three hours moro than tho Maxwell's record. There arc several mountain ranges and a desert, to cross on the run. The Maxwell's Medford agent Is the A. W. Walker Auto Co. THREE POPULAR . AUTOMOBILES One of the comparatively new firms is the Medford Autoniobilo Co., located on Xorth Riverside ave., op posito tho Natatoriiiin. C. P. Talent, the manager, has been an aulo sales man in this city for yeans, and thor oughly understands tho business. They hniidlo Mitchell, Hiipmobllo and Dorl, three popular cars, rang ing from low priced to standard priced, thereby being able to fit every pocket book "lean or fat." The Mitchell and "Hup" arc well known hero and there are several in the valley, but the Dart is a new car in this section and the dealers have only been able to secure ono car, which was picked up In a few days after it arrived. here, as the dealers there have to drive their cars by their own powor as far jis they can, and aro doing so almost to the extreme. Shipping automoDIlcs on flat cars is almost as common us shipping in box cars. However, in doing this it is more expensive, being impossible to ship more than thrco cars in this manner, in place of five or more. They are fastened securely to the car and then covered very close with heavy tarpauliun which keeps them almost as nice as if they were ill box cars. There are train loads of flat cars loaded in this manner, that are being rushed through as fast as pos siblo, but also this manner ot ship ping is limited. So far, the Howard Auto Co., Pacific Coast distributors for Buick cars, have not had to ac cept many shipments of this nature, but owing to the shortage of cars, have agreed to accept a trainload of Uuick automobiles on flat cars to supply tho demand in tho northwest. The lluick factory lias never been in a better shape to make deliveries on cars than it Is at tho present time. Having their warehouses full and all the additional room they can find. Automobiles aro being more exten sively used In tho east for almost every line of business, as welt as pleasure. People on the farms are finding a real saving in having a car to do thier running around, as It not only saves time, but it is a saving on their horses and is a great saving in money, as when you do not uso the car, it does not cost anything to keep it. 4,688,412 MILES BY TEST CARS "During 1 91 G the Goodrich fleet, of tire testing cars traveled USS,411' miles, which is equivalent to C30 trips from Xow York to San Francisco and return, and they used upwards of 390, 000 gallons of gasoline," said Dr. W, C. Goer, chief of the development de partment of the U. 1 Goodrich com pany recently. This statement was given out as six of the test cars left for tho south, where they will avoid the snow covered roads of Ohio for the next several months in making' their strenuous tests of the Goodrich products. The cars have been unable to make tho required 300 miles every 1M hours in northern Ohio and sinco this mileage is con- sidercd imperative by the Operating Committee, it was decided to transfer the work to a field where it can be carried on without any interruption. ! At Chattanooga the present fleet will be increased by five new cars and at Atlanta three more will be added, bringing tho entire number up to 11 cars with a crew of 37 men, all export drivers, who enjoy a record for 101(! that, was free from accidents. j "When 1 began driving ono of theso test cars," said one of the drivers, 'l thought it was all fun. but I soon had this taken out of me, for I have to make at least 150 miles during the day and then turn my ear over to a night driver, who also makes 1"0 miles. We keep a complete record of every tire and the liif.s as well as the cars are inspected by the factory experts every morning before we start out.; ' , , j CLIDDEN TOUR Of all the events In which the Metis has carried off first honors, probably none is of equal Importance with ils winning the last C-liddeu tour, an eight days' endurunce contest, from Minne aw)lis, Minn., to Glacier National Park, Montana, in which it was pitted against the pick and flower ot America's high-1 July, JUKI.
