This cir cumstance, coupled with the fact that there have hern no demonstra tions from any pari of the German trenches, eaased luui'li speculation unions the HritUh officers as to whether, despite the emperor's ad dress to his troops, the new peace overtures have been permitted to leach the men actually on the l'ijjlil uiir line. Documents captured wilhiu the last lew days' repeatedly mention the nu dacily and 'initiative of the allied iiv men and Field Marshal Yon llindcii liiug is quoted us lia inu; issued or ders thai 'the supremaer of the air must be sharply contested. Accord ing to these documents, the German chief of staff has ordered that where the German lines are crossed by hos tile aviators, German machiues must penetrate an equal distance over the allied lines. There lias been only a comparatively few hours of good fly ing wciillior in the Inst week, but nu merous eombala have taken place, twenty being fought on one niorning on a certain sector. - German' artillery has recently been icttvo and has responded more freely to the. continuous Hritisli fire. Ac cording to prisoners the preponder ance of British shells has deDressed the German troops in the trenches, who thought that their own artillery was not supporting them with the same vigor as the support the English gave to their men.
