was convinced several years ago that
in irrigation lay the hopo of prosper
ity for himself and tho valley farmore

stalled an oloctrlc pumping plant and
bas drawn wator for Irrigating 30
acres of alfalfa from Dear creek. Al
though he 1b able to supply himself
with water, Mr. Haurl is supporting
tho district plan.
Alfalfa Experience.
.''Alfalfa land without Irrigation,"
stated Mr. Haurl, "will no more than
pay taxes on the land, whereas I have
found that irrigated nlfalfa land will
pay a net profit of 10 per cent on a
valuation of $400 per acre.' If any

way between Central Point and Tolo

quantity of commercial fertilizer.

votes.

which to base opposition to irrigation

ey, chief of police, whose stntus in
the police department of Chicago is
expected to be decided today by May

haps suffered more injuries thun
any other officer now on the force.
During is thirty years of service
in the police deportment, every ma
jor bone in his body has been broken
while in the performance of his du
ties. The following is a list of his
most serious injuries:
Hroken: Hoth thighs, both legs, rigid
arm, five ribs, collar bone, nose, four
fingers of right hand.
Dislocated: Shoulder nnd left arm.
Shuttered by bullet: night wrist.
In addition to these injuries he suf
fered numerous knife and razor cuts
and clubbings about the head during
his career as a policeman.
For several days there have been
rumors that Chief Henley would re
sign on request of the mayor but
early today he said ti'.o mayor had
not nsked him to resign, but slated
he would do so if requested.

John Austin Hooper, well known

Pass and a bank nt Hogue River and

caped from the Missouri stntc pen

escnpe was mndc November 22, the
authorities since that time making n
still hunt for hira. Friday Pacific
const authorities were warned to
keep watch for him as it is believed
he has stnrlcd for this section.
Hooper was sentenced to the Mis
souri penitentiary last July, being
given ten years for the killing of n
policeman. His defense was that he
believed the policeman was nttempt
iiig lo hold him up.
. Hooper's record of crimo is a long
one. In addition to tho holdups to his
credit ill this section, he had broken
parole at Folsom prison, California,
where he was under sentence for life.

he made n spectacular escape, no

rest in Missouri.

of reorganization of the course of

North Holly streetB, Dec. 8, aged 73
years and 2 days. Born Dec. C, 1843
at Freeport, Ills., and at the age of
17 years moved to Clilckisaw county,
Iowa, and there married the late
N. R. Johnston,' Aug. 0, 1801. To
