That the famous, writer's . death as an unexpected blow to bis widow and physicians was admitted today the secretary, who said that he Jul seen Mr. London yesterday af ternoon and that he seemed "cheer ful and confident of recovery." London complained of indigestion when he went to bed Tuesday niuht, but during; lifc last conscious hours he sat propped up in bed writing his daily quota of words, a task he had long; nf?o set himself for life. She declared that the news staggered her that he had so much before him. Besides his widow, the Ohnrmion of his books, he is survived by two daughters by his first wife, Joan nnd Hess; a sis ter, Mrs. Eliza Sheppard, and his mother. -London's orono.rties, including the Olen Ellen ranch, are almost entirely free, from debt. He left college to go to the Klondike during the famous gold rush. In 1894 he tramped through the United States for the purpose of making a first nhnd study ot social and economic problems, which he used, with his other experiences In his prolific writings. In 1906 London built a 65-foot yacht, the Snark, and in 1907-09 tie cruised the South seas In it. iHis life was stressful and many of his books, particularly "John Barley corn" were .popularly accepted autobiographical experiences. He was r4 an Indefatigable writer. Early In his 1 career he set himself the task of writ ing a certain amount every day and II he lived un to tho undertaking to the 'I ,... torn. I.ondon was deeply Interested In socialism and latterly dovoted him self to farming as a hobby, he testi fied In court a few days ago, to which he devoted all the earnings from his pen. Ho made a deep study of agri cultural problems and recently quali fied as an expert on irrigation. Mr. nnd Mrs. Chris Bergman were in the Butte Falls country last week looking after their ranch. Jasper Hannah is spending n few days in the hills looking after cattle. Our friend and neighbor, Joe Han nah, is propelling himself over the roads daily in his high-powered flyer. There was about a ton of land plaster came in Saturday morning for Fred Fridegar of Medford, who owns a twenty-acre tract of land just east of Eagle Point. George 11. W'chniau, our harness maker, and one of our regular board ers, has been spending the past week in the hills with one of his friends, Jud Eilsall, nnd Carl Roberts, an other one of our hoarders, has been spending a few days in Medford looking afler his business interests in Washington, D.
