Death Unexpected.
That the famous, writer's . death
as an unexpected blow to bis widow
and physicians was admitted today
the secretary, who said that he

ternoon and that he seemed "cheer
ful and confident of recovery."
London complained of indigestion
when he went to bed Tuesday niuht,
but during; lifc last conscious hours
he sat propped up in bed writing his
daily quota of words, a task he had
long; nf?o set himself for life.

The news of London's death was
broken last night to his first wife,
who lives in Oakland. She declared
that the news staggered her that he
had so much before him. Besides his
widow, the Ohnrmion of his books,
he is survived by two daughters by
his first wife, Joan nnd Hess; a sis
ter, Mrs. Eliza Sheppard, and his
mother.

Mrs. Flora London,' mother of
Jock London, is seriously ill at her

Jack London wbb born in San Fran
cisco, Cal., January 12, 1876. Ileen
tered the University of California but
dirt not complete his course. He left
college to go to the Klondike during
the famous gold rush.
He went to Bea 'beforo the mast in'
1892 and followed this next year with
a trip which Included a visit to Japan
and a, seal bunting cruise In the Ber
ing sea. In 1894 he tramped through
the United States for the purpose of
making a first nhnd study ot social
and economic problems, which he
used, with his other experiences In
his prolific writings.
In 1906 London built a 65-foot
yacht, the Snark, and in 1907-09 tie
cruised the South seas In it.
iHis life was stressful and many of
his books, particularly "John Barley
corn" were .popularly accepted
autobiographical experiences. He was
r4 an Indefatigable writer. Early In his
1 career he set himself the task of writ
ing a certain amount every day and

I.ondon was deeply Interested In
socialism and latterly dovoted him
self to farming as a hobby, he testi
fied In court a few days ago, to which
he devoted all the earnings from his
pen. Ho made a deep study of agri
cultural problems and recently quali
fied as an expert on irrigation.
He married Bessie Maddern of
Oakland, Cal., April 7f 1900 and No
vember 19, 1905 married Charmiau
Klltridge of Berkeley. Cal.

destination a day or two sooner.

east of Eagle Point.

spending a few days in Medford
looking afler his business interests

Frank Ditsworth came out Thurs
day with anolhcr load of beans, Ink
ing them to Medford, realizing 7 and
8 cents a pound. He returned to the
Suniiyside Friday and spent the
