UNITED STATES .SENATOH GEOROE E. CHAM BERLAIN will speak to tlie people of Ashland Mon day evening and to the people of Medford Tuesday evening. As ehainnan of senate committee on nulitary affairs, Senator Chamberlain occupies a most important position. Were war to be declared, perhaps the most important in the government. Senator Chamberlain is in a position to explain, from the inside, the administration's foreign and domestic pol icies. Ife can tell of the many times war threatened to become an actuality and how crisis after crisis was success fully passed through the coolness and skill of the nation's pilot, lie can outline the old, old struggle between privi lege and the people and the triumph of the latter in pro gressive legislation. "Our George" is always an interesting speaker, but his present speech is a vital message to the people and the peo ple should hear mm. . GERMANY REPLIES TO ROOSEVELT TIIE sinking of ten British vessels off the coast of New port, It..!., by German submai-ines constitutes a mtst effective answer to Colonel Roosevelt's bluff and bluster about seizing the German merchantmen interned in the ports of the United States. It is very evident from the colonel's argument as to the course he would have pursued were he in ottice, and the course to be pursued by Mr. Hughes in the event of his election, i. e.: to take the same action as that of Portugal l. e.: confiscation ot German merchantmen. Let the voter now contemplate the result, with our ports blockaded, our vessels being torpedoed at sea and our exports rotting in the granaries and warehouses, factories closed and our best blood fertilizing the beet fields of Bel gium and France. This is not, a fanciful picture created for political effect it must inevitably follow, once in war with Germany, that we must bear our equal share ot the burden in the trenches. l iermany lias answered M r. Kooseveit s campaign jingoism with "deeds, not words, and the voter may now thank God that neither Mr. Roosevelt nor Mr. Hughes are guid ing the American ship of state into German torpedoes, nor are they likely to be given the opportunity. Trouble in the Rear Ranks (From tin? New York World.) Senator Cummins of Iowa ami Sen ator I. it Fnlletto of Wisconsin are so remote from republican headquarters and the tributary financial interests that they cannot bo expected to un derstand the moral and intellectual forces of which Mr. Hughes has be come the chief spokesman. In Ins ignorance, Mr. Cummins be lieves that the national child labor law is honest and humane, a greatly needed piece of legislation and u credit to President Wilson and the democrats nnd republicans in con- ress who enacted it. Sir. Hughes bus sneered ut it and ileruled it. in op position to the candidate of his party, tho lown senator denies that the measure contains u joker or any other evidence of insincerity. With equal inattention to Mr. Hughes' speeches, the fuliniuiitions of the railroad press agents and prevail ing opinion in Wall street, Mr. Ln Folletto characterizes as false the statement that when congress, n lurge number of republicans voting in the affirmative, passed the eight-hour lan it was intimidated and coerced by the railway brotherhoods. On the con trary, he charges tho company inter ests with "tho expenditure of millions of dollars in nn effort to create a public opinion thnt would dei'eut the demnnds of the men." Unless Chairman Willcox enn pro vide better team work than this be tween the reactionary nnd the pro gressive elements of his party, it will be difficult to say whether republi cans are fighting democrats or rip pine one another up the back. ALASKA CANNERS WILSON APPEALS TO HIGHEST IDEALS OF THE REPUBLIC l.ONCl I1UANCII, N. .7. Oct. 9 Re turning from the middle west, Presi dent Wilson Saturday annealed to In dependent voters to support tho dem ocratic party in November on tho ground that it presents a united front for progressive legislation. Criticising the "old guard" of the republican party, the president by In ference attacked both Churles K. Hughes and Theodore Roosovolt and declared that while every line of his national policy has been assailed, "no liagrams have been drawn ot any other." President Wilson said ln part: "And one of the things that threat ens us In tho future If the republican party Is successful la a contl.et . be tween capital and labor, not because any new lines will be drawn but be- ause fo far many representatives of capital have refused to regard the la borer as a fellow human being, Just as much Interestel In the welfare of usiuess and the progress of society a tboso who organize business and conduct It. "When we take each other Into partnership there will be no more war between labor and capital. And the acts of co-partnership must he writ ten with the heart, not with tho brain. They must bo written because we mean It, not because wo think it Is expedient. They must be written he- ause America, founded In that day of vision, depends for her growth nnd her glory upon the realization of that vision of the rii'.hu of mnnklnd. We were born not lo pllr up material ''wealth but to ace that tho spirits of mankind did not, lose, heart. We were born to prefer justice to power, hu manity to any form ot selfish achieve ment. Wo raised up, aa we hove rais ed up In efficiency and in the harbor of Now York an linage of liberty en lightening the world, showing a lum inous light across the wators which wo said If men follow, It would lead them to u land of justice, to a land of brotherly love, to a land where men cooperated because they believed in each other's rights, to a laud where no man sought to bo another man's master, but where all men were unit ed otgether ln a like comradeship and affection. "These are the Ideals of America and these are tho Ideals which will settle the election of 1910." Bell-ans Absolutely Removes Indigestion. Oncpnckage proves it. 25c at all druggists. Adv. I NKW YORK, Oct. !). The stock market was demoralized at today's opening, standard issues as well us war stocks breaking fl, 10 nnd even 12 points nt the outset on enormous liquidation. The break was attributed to subma rine activities and their possible, consequences. The tnremost feature was I mtcd States Steel on nn offering of :)O,0U0 hnres at 112 to 101), representing' a loss over the week end of sliirhtly more than seven points. The mercantile marine issues, com mon and preferred, were lower by "' o to 12 points.' ' Distinctive munitions yielded It to 8 points. Even standard railway stocks such as Union Pacific, were subjected to tremendous selling pressure. Union Pneifie losing almost 6 points. After the most exciting half hour seen in the stock market since the panic of 1007 tho tide of liquidation was stemmed 1y heavy volume of buying orders reported to have been sent to tlie market byjmportant bank ing interests. Recoveries ranged from 4 to 8 points, while Republic Steel virtually regained its 18-point decline. Sales in the first hour reached the unprecedented total of approximately 900,000 shares. BRITISH STEAMER JUPITER BELIEVED TO BE SUNK LONDON, Oct. II. The Itritish steamship .lupitcr, of 282-1 tons gross, is believed to have been sunk, accordinc to an announcement made today at Lloyd's shipping agency. Tlie Jupiter was 28.") feet long, built at llreenock in 1001 and owned by the Hessler Shipping company of West Hartlepool. BOOM AS RESULT WASIIINOTON, Oct. 9. Possibil ities of diplomatic complications over the German submarine raid along the New England coast seemed today to point toward the allies as well aa Germany. State and navy officials, scanning the unofficial reports of the destruc tion of shiu,s within sight of Ameri can shores found no reason today to change their first impression that the; submarine operations had been con ducted so far within the limitations of international law, but they were fully alive to the dangerous possi bilities. Destruction of an American ship carrying contraband mlght'easily cause another Frye case and any loss of lite at all in any case might easily reopen the whole submarine question. The threatened complication with the allies lies in their contention that submarines, because of their nature, should be excluedd from all neu tral ports. Today's London dispatch es quoting the Manchester Guardian to the effect that such a view has been set out ln the recent memoran dum sent by the allies to neutral gov ernments, contain the first Intimation received here that anything in the na ture of a formal representation had been made. , ill 'S iff 3J1 First?
