Frank Silva accompan led lilni s a witness, OFASfMIll The lucul business mind is becom ing obsessed with the idea that, be roro Medford can make further pro gress 1" substantial growth, it must have the payroll. The only way to obtain the payroll Is to establish in dustrial enterprises. Te deduction contained in tho first statement and the lutier arc. truisms. Local business men have, there fore, concluded to begin the develop ment of local timber resources by the establishment of a sawmill. That is the only way to accomplish that purpose. The reason that local busi ness desire to develop the local tim ber resources Is found lu the fact that, by doing it themselves, they not only acquire the payroll neces sary in this development, but they keep tho dividends at home. Not only is tho most of the production of lumber kept in local circulation, but the profit on the product, owned by locul people, Ik kept ut home. Comiainy Now Being Formed. Willi this combination of ideas in view, a local company is now in pro cess of formation for that purpose. S. S. Bullis, president of the. Southern Oregon Traction Company, 'who is an oid-t'imo saw mill man, has sub scribed $10,000 to a fund of $25,000 for that company. Tho fact that Mr. Bullis l willing to subscribe tho I a eg est : individual. Biitii, thus giving the controlling interest to other local business men, w ho will subscribe the romainlng $ 15,000, ought to be taken as evidence of bis confidence in the enterprise and the profits of its operation. Mr. Bullis expresses a willingness lo invest In this project purely ns a business proposition. Hox Factory Will Follow, The saw mill contemplated in this project will yield a constant payroll of approximately $2,000 a week. The box factory will follow with a larger payroll, because It will require a greater number of operatives. This will make a fair start out of tho rut of inactivity from which local people have suffered severely for years. Other enterprises will quickly follow in the wake of these institutions of business, and thus we will recover our business equilibrium. Early next week, In order lo In sure sufficient rajdtul to handle the proposition, business men who are In terested In this enterprise "will ask other local men to invest what they may in It. The timo is short In which to take advantago or nn attractive of fer of plant and equipment. It is the desire of those who havo this matter in hand that to make it wholly a local project, thus enabling thorn to keep at home, not only all tho money In vested, but all of the profits accru ing from the operutlou of the plant, including the payroll. How iimny foolish circus rumors have you livurd -inco the first adver tising car of (be Knrnimi & p.ailoy show visited Medford and announced (hut the 'Vi-eato- hw on earlb" would exhibit here on Monday, Sep tember 11 for one ierformniiee at 10 :i. m.? Jlavoyuu heard that ierenuiiit tiu- tiiimted report (hat the show always divides into two after it leaves New York City in the spring, and that only half of it will be seen here, the other half briii"- on exhibition in some other portion of the country? No more, foolish fallacy ever exist-1 ed. It would be a physical impossibil ity to divide the ureal Itanium & Hai- j ley circus and from a bushiest stand point it would be suicidal. The most peeubar feature of this absurd and unfounded rumor that is circulated nearlv every year is the fact that such a t hiiijLT litis never even been at tempted in the hi-tory of oircusdom. A divided show would mean two sep arate and di.-tmet organizations, two enormous menageries, two complete equipments of canvas and railroad trains, two hosts of employes and performers. Such a scheme would be about as feasible as to divide a jrreat oeeiin liner into two or more pails ii ml send each pari to a different port. Of course,-at a cerium period dur 'X the summer there is hothiu; thai ennaes the attention of the young sters and the oldster. as does (he eoininir of the hij: circus, and it is iiile natural that its advent should be much disete-sed in advance. - It is decidedly unfair, however, both to tho central public ami lo the circus, to circulate stories that create doubt in the public mind and work luTrui to the circus in a on-micss way. No busi ness institution in the world suffers as much from false stmies and rum ors ns the circus does, and no Ihim 'iess institution bettor deserves to have tho truth told about it Hum dues the circus, for it is the one typical national amusement enterprise, cater ing lo all njres and classes. The Uar- niuii & Ihiilev circus, and the other biir enterprises ate operated as dean', legitimate anius'ement organizations. Their tremendous si.e alone make- it. possible for (hem to ;:ive a larger, costlier and better entertainment at a smaller cost to the patron than any other form 'of amusement. According to the poliee authorities in the cities which the Harnuiu & liai ley" circus has exhibited already this season, the show is altsolutely clean in every detail and every promise made by its advertising departments and the maiiiiycnient is rigidly observ ed.
