Tho de struction of the so-called Vera Cruz Issue of Mexican currency and the Issuance of the new paper money known as "Infalslflcables" have made the government printing office one of the busiest spots in Mexico. The Vera Cruz bills, over 50,000.- 000 worth of which have been de stroyed, are cut into strips In .a hydruullc press, transformed Into pulp and made Into cardboard and pasteboard of which there Ib a great scarcity. This product finds a ready sale and It Is possible that the gov ernment may also destroy old docu ments to produce material for a gov ernment box factory In the near fu ture. The department now Is working at high pressure to turn out the new lnulslflcttble" 2 bills, Borely needed because of the scarcity of small change. Not only the modern presses, but even tho old hand presses are being utilized to expe- lato the work. The tremendous nuantlty of post- ards and stamps printed under the uertu roglme are being revalidated by the. Impress 'of a Bpeclal dye, chunglng the denomination. The stamping out of copper coins has lieen begun and It Is announced this Is to be followed shortly by the coinage of both gold and silver. PARIS, Aug. '.Ml. Franco has taken all the necessary steps lo en- er into negotiations with England to uild jointly a tunnel under the Eng lish ehuniicl to connect the two conn- lies, the long-tnlked-of project which thc war bus revived because it has demonstrated ns nothing else could, the vulue of the tube to both countries. Had the tunnel been in existence duriinr the present conflict it would lave been of immeasurable value to Ongland and France fur the transpor tation of troops and supplies and would have liberated French unil Brit ish war vessels from one of their big gest tasks. The plans were outlined by M. Sur- tiaux, chief engineer of the Nord Rail way company, who is one of the strongest advocates of the project. lie said : The tunnel will cost 1 0,0(10,000 umiiils, hall' of which would he borne y England and half by France. Each country would bore one-half of the tunnel. Well, Krifain is spending just now (i, 000,000 nounds per day anil France 1,000,000 pounds, so that two days' wartime expenditure of both ountries would more than cover the cost of making (ho tunnel. "It is proposed lo mako two tun nels, one for traffic from France to England, another for traffic from England to France. Some people seem to think a cross-channel tunnel might be a danger, because it mighl full into the hands of Ihe enemy. To cupturc the French end would not be an easy task. The month of Ihe tun nel on French soil would be ten miles from the coast, and in order to reach it the enemy would have to capture Cnlnis, and negotinte three intervca- ng hills of un average height of l"i(l feet. 'The tunnel on the French sidi would begin its journey under sea at Sangatte. In my belief, U would be mpossihle for nn enemy to reach the mouth of the tunnel and get at the leetric plant. The motive power could he instantly suppressed and the tun uel immediately tvudcred useless bv filling it wilh poisonous gas."
