Yet Alex. 2sTihley and his nsnoeintcn in the promotion of the factory, knowing that the factory wits, assured (Irants I'ass hecanse of tlio stock subscript ion and site sub sidy, deliberately assured the business men and farmers of Medford and vicinity that the factory would bo. located whore the greatest acreage of sugar boots was secured, and that tho factory would bo located in Medford provided tho bulk of the acreage was signed here. When the retpiired acreage had been pledged by tho Medford area and it was ascertained that the iactory would go to (Irants Pass, regardless of the location of beet acreage, in violation of the promises made, a jiatural re sentment arose against the double-crossing methods of promoters and caused tho cancellation of the bulk of the acreage signed. The promise had boon made simply as a bait to secure the co-operation of Medford people in sign ing acreage, with no intention of being fulfillod. . Had the promoters frankly taken the public into their confidence, explained why it was necessary to locate the factory at (Irants Pass, a greater actual acreage would ht in boots today and there would have boon no hard feelings over labor lost iu a false? cause. The operators would have bad the good will of tho community. According to Mr. Sanders, the promotion litis boon ex ceedingly profitable to the promoters, who have already cashed in their prospective profits, realizing from 200 to BOO percent profit, besides aiding their other investments. Yet the location at (Irants Pass was a strategical mistake, as shown by the fact that tho operators must pay freight on beets from an area extending from Oakland on the north to Ashland ou (lie south in order to secure the retpiired (juautity ol beets.
