"Ilnmadun, the tienuie rily of tho Kit'itt Achucmoninn kin;;s, identified with t lie resplendent Kolintnnn of tho (Iruuk writers, which lias come under control of Russians advancing i'rum Teheran, lies well on tho wny toward tlint part of the Tigris basin where the Euglish and Turks are slriiliui? amid suones of tho earliest human battlefields," begins u wnr primer is sued today by tho National Geo graphic soeicty. "The ancient oily lies 188 miles west-southwest of the Persian eapital, Teheran, while the ground maintained bv the British e. peditionuries lies about 250 miles uwuy to tin) southwestward. "All vestiges of tho bygone glory of tho nlnee have been destroyed, save alone a famous but battered stone lion, which lies in sombre, mu tilated desolation flat upon the plain tiear tho road leading to Isfahan. The old lion has lasted through all the ages of llamtidan, a guardian genius of the town; for it was set up as a talisman to protect tho walls of the city. The lion's fate and tho city's fate were connected in u propheev that the citv and its people would be safe as long as the lion was not thrown down or broken. The talis man todav enjoys a superstitious veneration; mother bring their bnb ies to kiss the huge enrven face and pilgrims place offering of stone be fore it. According to one tradition, the lion was set up to frighten nway the severe winters of Hamndan. Is Most Ancient City "The imiiio of tho city can bo trac ed back to earliest times, and it means literally 'a place of meeting of many ways'. In, tho days of the city's splendor tho most prominent highways of tho civilized world cross ed here. It is still a meeting place of many highways from many parts of the Persian kingdom, and the chief station on the road from Persia to Uagdud and to the Persian gulf. It has thus been able to maintain a scrap of its old prestige as a place of wealth, niul ns a city important in Persian commerce and industry. "Crooked alleys, dirty walks and st reel ways, squalid houses and dingy brown neglect effect uiilly suppress memories of the city's former great ness, when it was the home of kings, the seat of fabulous riches; a fore most display city of the world, whose buildings were fretted with gold and silver; and the home of such riotous luxury as the world has never seen, and a- modern eivilizutinn has for gotten how to provide. All luxury has departed from Ilamadnn; hut, then, the city is supposed to have passed its IlOUOth anniversary, an age at which the giddy pleasures of youth are no longer tempting. Founded liy Kcmlrnmls "Kamman-nirnri, whose greatest claim to fame is that ho was the bus. baud of Queen Seniiramis, began tho long centuries of royal patronage that built up llitmndau, and his renowned queen, Seniiramis, launched the place upon its brilliant career. Hamadan btendily grew in wealth and favor, added ever new splendor, to its pub lic works, state buildings and private places, erected columns tind arcades overlaid nilli plates of gold and sil-' ver, constructed a costly royal homo of cedar and cypres woous, and planted famous gardens. .Most of this wealth was looted by Alexander the Oront, wioe men curried nwa.v u treasure vnt even for the present age of wealth. Following Alexander, Antigonns, Scoiiciik Nicator and An tioohus the Client plundered here, and, according to Polybius, the Greek bis. lorian, there remained in llnmadau a wealth equal to 1000 talents (,f,730, 000) to the last nlundeior." Mr. and Mis. Harrv A. Tibbits re turned Sunday lroni Hoeliester, N. Y.i whence they accompanied the re mains of Mr. Tibbit's father. He is again in chnrge of the. Honnor of tho Evans Creek valley, were Christmas shoppers in Gold Hill lnt Saturday. Schools in Gold Hill closed Tues day with appropriate programs, and the children will now have vacation until .Monday, January l. The vari ous teachers whose relatives livo out side of Gold Hill have all departed to their respective homes. Fred Dodge, constructing engineer at the local power plant of the It. 1(. P. S. corporation, made n business trip to Grants Pass Monday. Mrs. C. E. Wharton and Miss Flor enco Wharton drove to Medford Tuesday for n brief visit. Mr. and Mrs. Hay Mooro were call ers at Grants Pass Monday. F. I). Schnnnp, timekeeper nt the loenl cement plant, left for Portland Wednesday evening. Ho expects to return home about Sundny morning. Miss l.eln Flippon departed on Tuesday for Adele, a ranch town in the I.ukeview district. On her de parture it was announced that she would be married to Floyd Morris, nt Lnkcviuw on Thursday, December '2l. Miss Flippcn has resided in Gold Hill and vicinity for a number of years. Tho bridegroom, u young ranchman of Adele, is known to U few Gold Hill people, as he has visited this city at various times within the last year. .Miss Grace Milam is at the homo of her parents, Professor and .Airs. G. W. Milam, for tho holidays. She is a student at tho annual at Mon mouth. One of the freak chances attend ant upon the handling of high ex plosives overtook Walter Painted last Saturday, with the result that the young man has temporarily retired from his school studies und other employment. With his brother-in-law, Arehio Walker, ho had prepared a small charge of dynamite to split a log for firewood. Pni'iter lighted the fuse, and nt the instant of igni tion an explosion occurred in the fuse itself, badly lacerating both his hands and inflicting other wounds in his chest and shoulders. From the wounds fragments of copper were ex tracted. As no metal is contained in the fuse, the cause of tho explosion nnd the presence of the metal par ticles is something of a riddle at least Painter's palms wure riddled. He is making a good recovery. The benefit vaudevillu pud movio show given at the Comus on Tuesday evening for the Christmas tree fund netted an appreciated profit for the worthy project. Miss Claire Tucker was repeatedly encored in her vocal selections. Felix, the trained duck, suffered a stroke of oral paralysis that marred to some extent the smoothness of Heed & Walker's clever turn.
