Hewlett. r Tho last time tliat I wrote for the rendcm of tho Mall Tribune I was at the Lemonslra ranch four miles from Santa Penln, Ventura county, California, and stopped ofMjust as I was about to start from San Fran cisco on my way to I.oh AngeleB. J took passage on tho steamer Congress from San Francisco to San Pedro, Cal., on Friday, July 23; rit 4 o'clock P. ml unil had n fln volago as tho weather was qulto calm and tho sea was reasonably smooth, nlfliough the vegsel rocked considerable and several or the six hundred pasesngera were quite sick but I mado up my mind that I would not bo sick and consequently was not and tho next morning tint fog was gono and wo had a fine vlow of the distant lands along tho California coast nnd tho Islands (hat we passed reaching San Pedro about C p. m. on Saturday, wheni wo took the car for a twenty mllu ride. Hut before telling any more of my trip I wish to say some thing for the benefit of persons who contemplate taking a like trip. There are three different companies that aro In business and the first one I visited said they charged $9.35 $10.35, nnd we would havo to pay for our berth nnd meals extra. Tho next charged $r.nr, $7.35 and $9.35. and the next was $8.35 for flrt clnss, meals and berth Included, so I. took the latter and found a goad berth nnd meals equal to thn best. After taking the car we traveled through a barren waste the most of tho way for about ten miles nnd then wo be- gnn to see somo places that showed a little, signs of lire, but Jho land all along tho rotito did not compare with tho land of Rogue rlvor valley. Wo finally reached tho wonderful city of Los Angelos and after looking urround for a few minutes I con cluded that at least somo of them were dark angels for tho fltst man I spoko to who had a taxi asked mo a dollar to tako mo to tho lllble In stitute, tho hotel whore 1 was direct ed to slop, a distance of six blocks, but I took 'n street car and paid tlvo cents for the trip. On reaching my hotel I . secured a good room for 75 cents a night. The noxt morning I took a street car and rode eight miles out to whero nty sister lives and foil ml hor awaiting mo and our meeting was tho first one for tho past seventy years, nnd of courso wo worn simply strangers, but still a happy mooting. I found hor well and hearly ln ,,cr 89,n i,cnr' t wafl very mucu disappointed In Los An geles for I found tho streets woro very nnrrow and oxewpt In tho most crowded parts of tho city tncro were no policemen to guldo tho cars, nutos and wngons so that pedestrians had to, keop their own lookout and flnd out tho way they wanted to go. They host they could, and tho only way there la to keop a cool head and enqulro of tho street enr con ductors nnd I found them very oblig ing. Aftor spending threo days In A)a Angeles I took a train for San ta Paula, whero I was met by my nophows and taken to the I.emonslrn ranch.- Hut before I begin to toll of tho wonderful lemon ranch 1 wish through which I had to pass, al though dark camo on boforo we reached the city of S. P. For a fow miles out from L. A. wo traveled through some nice looking land but When we got Into the San Fernando valley I was surprised to find that wo were actually traveling over' a vast desert for there was no vege tation visible except tho cactus and sago brush, and this continued for a long way, I am not able to say how far for It began to got dark bo that I could not see but tho country did not appeal to mo In the leost. on niv arrlvel at Santa Paula an auto and my nephew James V. How lott, met mo and took us out to the I.Qinonshire ranch and the next morning began to sot my bearings and seo what were my surroundings and I found myself In tho midst of one of tho most celebrnted lemon orchards in the lT, S. There are threo thousand acres ln the tract nnd It belongs to a bunch of capitalists. There Is a consid erable portion- of the land that Is worthless as the bills are so steep that they cannot bo cultivated, but they have 800 acres In lemon trees nnd 350 acres In walnuts and sev eral hundred acres In hay. nnd some 00 acres In young trees, and this land Is planted to Lima beans. Hut tho most Interesting part Is tho hand ling of the lemons. They rlpon every month In tho year nnd consequently are constantly picking and packing them. The picking is done by Mox leans, and thoy are rqulred to wear gloves so not to scratch the lem on with 'the finger nails and each picker han-a ring on his wrist that ),e measures oaoh lemon, and any one that will so through tho ring Ue leaves to grow larger. Tho lem ons aro placed In a sack with snaps to hold the bottom up and when the aok Is full enough he place tho sack In a lbx. loosens tho snap and the lemons roll out so as not to Bruise thorn. They are then abwed on wagons and taken to tho pack- OLD NICODEMUS NIMBLE AT WAPV WAPTE UTILIZED ! ! NICK' BUILDP HUGE BRIDGE FROM OLD QCRAP9! " SiBBEfe) lly 1 1 UA(0WJQ) ')&ii((sil4 ! They then pass tnrough another run way where they aro sprinkled with clear water to wash off the suds and vltrol wnter. Thoy aro then run on to n platform whero ten Japs aro to sort thorn ovor and cnrefully ex amine each lemon nnd put in Its proper "grado. They aro then stacked In boxes to dry nnd If the weather Is too drying they are covered with heavy canvas so as to exclude tho air and aro watched by men who havo charge of this work and whon tho atmosphere h right tho canvass Is raised, etc. This process Is kept up for two months and by that tlmo thoy nro cured nnd rendy to put on tho market, but before that Is done each lomon has to be examined nnd hand led by two nioro men, then wrapped with paper and packed In boxes for shipment. They nro now shipping threo enr loads a- day and expect to ship four hundred car loads this sea sort.
