The Ashland sub-station of the Callfornla-OreRon Power company pas totally destroyed by flro New I Year's eve, entailing a property loss estimated at $30,000, covered by in jsuranee. The structure and maitilu- ery Is a total loss. Tho origin of , the fire has not been determined. It is still burning this morning. The flro started between 9 nnd 10 ! o'clock nnd caused a cutting off of , the service lu this city for a few ' minutes. The Ashland fire depart-! ment was powerless to halt the prog-1 ress of the flanios. which had gained ; headway before their nrrlvnl. ', .Manager Malone or the electric company has n force of men at work reconstructing the plant, and tho ser vice will be reconnected as soon us possible. In the meantime Ashland is without electricity. Medford cntors a New Year today after a unlet twelvo months generally throughout tho land, In better shape financially and optlmlstlrally, than any city in tho state. Nineteen four teen va an even year, with tho scale of buslnesK. building, crops, and Kn eral conditions midway between good and bud. There Is now hope and promise for 1! 15. The business strongth of the city Is shown by tho fact that nil the large concerns aro still operating, nnd re port an increased trade during the year from outside points. For the last months there has been steady Improvement In all lines. Ileal es tate changed hands, and there were several largo buys of city and or chard property. The construction of a box factory and development of great bodies of timber lying adjacent to this city are piospects for J915.
