Good attendance has marked the meetings in tho country districts to date, characterized by n calm indif ference to future welfare. Tho atti tude has been "let the other fellow do it.'' There is no crystallized sentiment throughout the valley against tlte beet sugar proposition. It is agreed that it would ho n valuable asset to wards southern Oregon im-penly but its newness apparently appalls, and the traditional mosbbnok fear that others will benefit most bv the investment produces masterly slug gishness. On several instances tho committee has been greeted with the query, "I will take a chance if my neighbors will." The neighbors ad vance with the same proiHition. This afternoon the committuo will hold n meeting at Willow Springs un der the direction of D. W. Stone nnd R. W. Eldon, nnd there are indica tions that some signs of life will be shown, many of the residents of that section being acquainted with the benefits derived from the cultivation of sugar beets. Thursday afternoon meetings will lie held in Central Point and Talent, Friday in Phoenix nnd Saturdny in this city. About four week arc left within which the committee can secure the required acreage. J. W. Storoy, the beet sugar soil expert, is accompany ing the committee nu its trips, his ex penses being paid by public-spirited citizens. Illustrating the principle upon which he operates is cited the ense of an Eaglo Point landowner who of fercd forty acres, but was told that it would not be a paying invest ment, owing to the nature of the soil. Tho beet sugar interests asks no bonus, and offer a contract us sim pic as the Ten Commandments, with out bewildering legal phrases. States rights at that timo was tho stumbling block that prevented tho recognition of tho rights of man nnd added years of un told nurferlug and servitude to human beings." Governor Hodges pointed out that tho only objection offered to prohi bition Is that It does not prohibit nnd that this argument Is advanced by the liquor Interests. GERMANS W OH ALONGSIDE FRENCH SAIXT POL, Franco, via Paris, December 30. German prisoners of war work cheerily nt the sido of their armed French guards in repairing the much damaged national highways in this region, just to tho rear of the colossal battle front. The prisoners arc on the bent tonus with their cap tors, who good-naturedly share cig arettes, whiffs from their pipes nnd other luxuries with their erstwhile foes. The prisoners remain only a Hbort time in this neighborhood. As boon as a sufficient number is taken to fill u train, the captives are dispatched to so'iau town on the coast or in the interior, or embarked for Algeria. In this region there lias been much activity from morning to night on no- count of (ho passage of great supply convoys, interspersed with columns of troops proceeding gaily to (ho front to take their tunis in the trendies. Medford with 10-mill special school lew; Eaglo Point with 0 mills, in crease 2 mills; Hold Hill with VI mills; Phoenix, 0 mills, an increase of ''..') mills, and Talent with i.fi mills, nn increase of '2.5 mills. Those who protest the increased school tax do so, not against the principle of assessing the county in stead of the district, but because the districts have not reduced thuir lev- its as promised, nnd the effect is in creased taxation for Medford nnd other Inrue districts.
