Good attendance has marked the

There is no crystallized sentiment
throughout the valley against tlte

that it would ho n valuable asset to

but its newness apparently appalls,
and the traditional mosbbnok fear
that others will benefit most bv the

committee has been greeted with the
query, "I will take a chance if my
neighbors will." The neighbors ad

This afternoon the committuo will
hold n meeting at Willow Springs un
der the direction of D. W. Stone nnd
R. W. Eldon, nnd there are indica
tions that some signs of life will be
shown, many of the residents of that
section being acquainted with the
benefits derived from the cultivation
of sugar beets. Thursday afternoon
meetings will lie held in Central Point

Saturdny in this city.
About four week arc left within
which the committee can secure the
required acreage. J. W. Storoy, the
beet sugar soil expert, is accompany

upon which he operates is cited the

that it would not be a paying invest

SAIXT POL, Franco, via Paris,
December 30. German prisoners of
war work cheerily nt the sido of their
armed French guards in repairing the
much damaged national highways in
this region, just to tho rear of the
colossal battle front. The prisoners
arc on the bent tonus with their cap
tors, who good-naturedly share cig
arettes, whiffs from their pipes nnd
other luxuries with their erstwhile
foes.
The prisoners remain only a Hbort
time in this neighborhood. As boon
as a sufficient number is taken to fill
u train, the captives are dispatched
to so'iau town on the coast or in the
interior, or embarked for Algeria.
In this region there lias been much
activity from morning to night on no-
count of (ho passage of great supply
convoys, interspersed with columns
of troops proceeding gaily to (ho
front to take their tunis in the
trendies.
