K Bf yt i fel liu f " PTJtm BtX AT CRATER LAKE PARK Active work In tlo Crater Lake Nnttonnl I'nrlc In being started this sonfon tho earliest cvor known. Three JarKO ntcmn r1ioo!b have nl ready been landed on the Klamath Klde, two of which will be used In connecting the Pinnacles road, built lat year, with the old road and also in extendlns tho former northerly nlotiR the rim ot the lake. One wilt bo used between the Klamath en trance and headquarters, as also be tween the latter point and tho lako and on the road to Mcdford, Tho laBt grade, leading to the rim of the lake, with a maximum of 30 icr rent, has been entirely eliminated by the comnletltlon of a new one with easy curves and n grade of ten per cant. From the foot of this grado to the Klamath entrance will be graded and drained at once, on tho romnlctltlou of which work will com mence to tho west, and If conditions will permit, grading will bo com pleted to the' cdford entrance. In any event tho switchback, commonly known as tho corkscrew, will bo elim inated before tho season cIom-s. Itoail Around Him It la expected that the proposed road around tho rim will bo so far advanced this season, that next year It will be postdble for automoblltsts to visit not only the pinnacle, but, to extend their tour to the vicinity of Mount Scott and tho Wineglass. Superintendent Steel and a crew of men left this morning for the park, ntid will clear the road as thev pro gress. Mr. Arthur Too will accom pany tho party In the Interest or tho Crater Lake company, and will open the store at the lower camp, so that visitors may be accommodated with supplies. Mr. rnrkburst will leave Portland ou June lr.lh with a full rrn? nt ttmnlnvpa fnr tho hotels, as also two touring cars and a two ton I truck, with tho latter of which he ex pects to solve tho old and cmbirrass lug problem of transporting supplies and building materials. Tho amount and character of work to be accomplished under direction of the superintendent, depends en tirely upon tho amount of money ap propriated by congress, and as the appropriation Mils have not yet been even considered, no deflnlto plans can be outlined. Last year tho ap propriation amounted to $7ri00. In view of the fact that In 1915 tho San Francisco fair will cause an enorm ous Increase In the number of vis itors, as alio the additional fact that this will be the longest season for actlvo work In tho field, a very greatly Increased appropriation could bo used to advantage, and an extra effort should be made to get It. To Imprmo Trail If tho appropriation will permit, the trait to tho lako will bo so Im proved as to permit 'the use of bur ros and also a trail of that character will be constructed to the summit of Garfield Peak, from which one of the finest views In Oregon Is obtained, and to which an automobllo road will eventually be constructed. Since tho close of last season sov cral now orders havo been Issued by the secretary of tho Interior, among which may be mntloned ono pro hibiting loose dogs In tho park. They enn be taken there, but, must be kept tied. If found running at largo they will be shot. Another requires n permit from tho department for taking moving pictures, besides which it Ih necessary to give to tho Interior department n positive of all Biich films. "Ft.
