The lecture given by Dr. William son of the Oregon Stnte Soeinl Hy- uicne society, under the auspices of the department of social hjuiene of the Greater Medford club, was n de cidedly interesting and educational feature. He called the at tent on of the public to the fact that twenty per cent of the insanity and six to eight per cent of the blindness ex isting in the world today are caused by the veuereul diseases known ns tile great red plague. The underly ing cause of these conditions are sil ence and ignorance on the part of the parents. Consequently n moe- ment wim started in Huroe a num ber of j ears ago to abolish this so cial evil. In 1!)0.' it was brought to America and was very miiek to mnke an impression. In 1011 the Oregon State Social Hygiene society wu or ganized nnd is the first to recehe legislative aid, an appropratimi of 10,000 per annum for two ycni be ing git en. Branches of this society are being formed in vnrioiis towns throughout the state. Speakers will be seat out nnd litem tine distributed from time to time. Peron doiring literature on any particular ipiestiou may receive same by writing t head quarters at Portland. This social evil in daily becoming giealer and only by the hearty eo-opcralion of the enerat public, paiticulurly par ents and teachers, can it be overcome and eveutuullv entirely abolished. Professor Hodge of the 1'iiiversity of Oregon uddressed the convention. His subject wns "Klementary, Scien tific Kducation." He said that there was no topic so important in the edu cation of the child, nnd if science is iiny good the younger it is upplied to the child the better. He quoted Sir William McDonald of Canada as having done a great deal for the chil dien in Canada along scientific lines.
