To tho Editor Mall Tribune. Tho people ot Metlfortl who nre cltiinorliiK for tho continuance of tho incut stall in the public market arc the most unreasonable agitators Iniaglanulfle and n vlllgenco posse should be at once organized to deal with them as was done at San Diego, Cal. They should ' Iw made to roallzo they are the legitimate prey fqr butchon;. How can a butcher bo expected to maintain prices If competition Is allowed in that man ner. Uoutdes the good people should In justice bo mado to pay the rent and taxes for him. By all means council should cut out the competi tion. Those unreasonable creatures will licit l kicking on tho Staudard Oil trust. Steel trust and other phil anthropise Institutions. WILLIAM J. SCOTT. Central Point, Juno 10. Xecd of Xew Bridge. That Mcdford needs a new bridjio nnd needs it hadly is the concensus of opinion of tlto-c who have occ:imoii to use it most. Ileinj; in the Taxi cab and touriuj; car business, my curs hayc occasion to cross Uc pres ent bridge many"iii)ie.s every day. Quite frequently travel is so heavy lliat the bridge is Mocked and one lias to wait 4'or clearance. The bridge is so narrow that one has barely two feet play in passing, and it is a wonder how serious accidents have been avoided. Then again it i unsafe for our Heavy automobile trucks to cro.is londed to their full capacity. It is safe to say thut thin bridge is used more than five hun dred times greater than any other bridgo in tho county, and the traffic is increasing nt n fast rate, especially so since the P. & E. It. It. have es tablished their depot on the east side. In wanting a new bridge, Medford is asking for very little according to our population and the amount of taxes we pay. Med ford always stands for progress nnd contiiiually in favor of granting improvements to oilier parts of the country, that would benefit the people in that par ticular (.ection.' Hoosting.r-Ve, are boosting all the time, we have spent thousands of dollars for booMing in the last eight years. ' Our boosting has been an in direct benefit to every one in Jackson county and more especially the laud owners, lloostiugund natures natural advantages have brought untold wealth to our valley. People with money have invested hero inul after wards iuvsted u large amount of money on improvements. I only mention this to show thai investors of capital, hero expect Jnckson county to keep abreast with the tunes. The Potter Palmers are at tho present tiim) expending twenty-five thousand dollar on improvements, and that too on a ranch that only .i few years ago Mr. Uowcrs held a mortgago on for nineteen thousand dollars. Mr. Carlton sold his ranch for more ihaii thirty thousand dollai'n when a few years ngo six thousand would hnvo been a big price. Some more of Medfoid's advertising. Only a short time nj,'o Mr. J lowers owned properly in another part of the slate and ws continually having trouble with the county. of ficiuls, sNov I, for ono, do not want u self appointed guardian for the county who says ho is trying to save the tax payers from expending twenty thous and dollars by an injunction, when, if ho would hnvo begun injunctions earlier, would have saved the county over four hundred thousand dollars. Why all this sudden interest for tljo tax payers by Mr. Ilowers? Js it because Mcdford wants something, or bus ho some ax to grind 1 1 would like to henrt froin others who have occasion to "use tun present bridge. I am sure ono and nil are in favor of the proposed new bridge, COUJif IIATJ.. A GREAT VICTORY FOR MEDFORD. nplllS community owes a groat lebtto f lulled ford Traf- fit Bureau, which has affected a material reduction in railroad rates, not only for .Mcdford but for all Southern Oregon. When the Traffic Bureau began its campaign three veal's ago for a reduction in rates, for the removal of un just discriminations, for an equalization in tariffs propor tionate to what other localities were paying, its efforts met bitter opposition, but a small percentage of the com munity supporting it. During the veal's since it has con ducted a winning fight all along the line, and aroused the other towns to co-operate. "By its cases before the state railroad commission rates have twice been reduced from Portland ami now average 10 per cent less than when the fight began. By its cases before (he Inter-State Commerce Commission, it has just secured reductions from San .Francisco and California points, and distributive rates from Mcdford to Northern California points. Other cases are ponding to secure Mcdford the benefit of terminal rates from eastern points. The MedfortLTraffie Bureau saw the necessity of un dertaking this campaign in order to enable Medford to become a jobbing and distributing center. Xo work done l3 any organization, not even barring the Commercial dub. jncans more to the future of this section than that undertaken by the bureau, which should receive the financial support and assistance of tho entire community. hen its program is completed, every large jobbing house will have to establish a branch hero and distribute to Southern Oregon and Northern California from Mod lord. The bureau has an initiative petition that it is cir culating for signatures for a bill establishing uniform freight rates on a proportionate mileage basis in Oregon. This will abolish the discrimination existing in favor of Portland and enable Medford and everv other citv to ship as cheaply to Portland as Portland can ship to it. This bill must become a law if the small towns of Oregon are to he given a chance to develope. The bureau needs funds to help pay for circulating this bill, Help by con tributing. The victories already scoured bv the Traffic Bureau are duo in no small degree to its rate, expert, Frank 11. Cune of Portland, whose masterlv handling of the cases and whose comprehensive exhibits have been compliment ed by tho Inter-State Commissioners, lie won the Spokane and Reno rate cases, the "Wool Growers rate case and sev eral others, and is without question, the best posted rate expert in the west. HEALTHFUL SIGNS. INTERIOR farming is being practiced more extensively in the Rogue River Yallev todav than ever before. As yet only.a -small. percentage of the available, area. is thus utilized, bur with the extension of tho irrigating system a great change will come. The effect is already marked. Instead of having to send out money to secure produce wo are beginning to send out produce to secure money besides consuming our own production. It is a healthy sign of the times and the most promis ing prospects that we face. A year ago at this time., sev eral carloads of eggs had been shipped into the Rogue River valley. This year Mcdford alone has already shipped out two cars. of eggs and as much more in smaller shipments. Last year 43 cars of vegetables and fruit were shipped into the valle', not to mention daily consignments, by ox press. There was no encouragement for the farmer to raise vegetables, for grocers would not purchase his pro ducts. This year the Mcdford public market opens the way for him to dispose of what he raises, and the co-operation of the Southern Pacific has provided a special re frigerator car three times a week for produce shipments to Portland to enable the grower to market his surplus. Last year 8-1 cars of potatoes and onions were shipped into the valley, despite the fact that the finest onions on the coast are raised hero and our potatoes equal to tiny grown. Those who planted potatoes last year made ji fine profit, yet did not begin to supply the demand. Double the acreage has been planted this year, and with irrigation, potatcs are always a most profitable crop. The valley instead of importing'Sl cars, ought to be exporting a thousand ears of potatoes from its idle land alone. A year ago 225 cars of hay were imported and 02 (til's exported, 10! cars shortage of local demand. Im ports of oats and barley totaled 48 cars, of flour and feed 432 cars. In spite oi si Javorablo year and increased acreage, the local production of these staples will fall far short ot the local demand. Idle hind can be made to produce this shortage with several hundred cars for ex port, but irrigation is necessary to insure crops in un favorable years. Nature has done too much for the Rogue River val ley, if the soil was less fertile, we would scratch it hard er and make it yield more. If the climate was more arid, we would appreciate better the value of water and double our output. If we didn't have a home .market we would be striving to raise jn'Oflucc for both home and foreign markets. Fruit should not be the only resource of the horticul turist. He should aim to make other crops, his vegetables, berries, corn, hay and produce, his cows, poultry and boos pay all the expenses of the family itind'Hiaintonaiice. of the orchard, so the fruit proceeds will be "velvet." It is done pn some orchards now and can bo done on every orchard with water. h !& "When we tire exporting a surplus of nvovy crop pos sible to raise, when our idle lands tire utilized by produc ers instead of by speculators, when these conditions shall havo heon realized by the extension oi the irrigation sys tems, the Rogue River valley will be the most prosperous section in the entire nation and national panics can come and go without disturbing its prosperity.
