Medford Is well satisfied with the pavement being laid In the" city, for she feels that she Is getting a "square deal." And after all, that Is the one big essential. Tho following letter speaks for Itself: December 26, 1911. Mr. O. Arnsplger, City Engineer, Medford, Oregon. Dear Sir Your letter of December 2 1st at hand requesting a complete report of tests made on paving sam ples taken from work laid in your city. In the oast two" years, during which time wo understand the greater part of your sheet asphalt" pavement has been laid, 86 samples of wearing sur face mixture have b4cn analyzed, re quiring the 'making of over 500 sep arate determinations. In the main these tests have indicated the? use of the best quality of materials avcliable for this purposej this being further checked by analysis and tests made on samples of raw materials fur nished from time to time. A short time ago while In your city, through your courtesy I had tho opportunity of Inspecting the fin ished work' as well as tho plant from which it was laid, and your local concrete sewer pipe plant In which It Is understood much. of tho newer pipe used In your cltr and neighbor ing cities' Is manufactured. The Im portance of such a control should become more plain as tho Increased value of tho pavements become moro apparent through their possession of qualities not found in pavements In which control has not been exercised. This being accomplished at a Cost per yard'of pavement laid ns low as found In any city where work of equal qual ity has ' been put down. Samples taken from the factory of your local concrete- sower pipe on which tests have been mado show this to bo tho best quality of concreto sewer plpo that has been submitted to this la boratory for testing. This Is due to the uscj of materials well adapted to tho purpose In connection with n thorough understanding of the prin ciples of good concreto construction. The result of tho uso of crushed rock in tho aggregate and tho wet method of mixing Is u finished pro duct of great density and consequent low porosity and elimination of leak age In tho finished line. This product Is superior to tho In ferior grades of clay pipe found on this market and will compnro favor ably In strength and gcnoral qunllty with much of tho bettor grades obtainable. From the above mentioned tests of materials and mixtures' entering into, and of the completod work Itself, it Is apparent to nnyouo conversant with such matters that any compari sons made can result only favorably to tho work accomplished in your city.
