I li; H EM3E BTQHT Saving a Rogue River n- i,v .. '. N,4 f.'M V HE52cH That t!o Roguo rher valley should ' bo tho first groat section In the Pa-j clflc northwost to protect orchards from frost Injury by scientific meth ods of orchard heating Is quite In ' keeping with the spirit, Intelligence and progrefialveness of tho orchard ists who own the broad acres of thl3 fertile valleV. Tho advance made along this line of scientific horticul ture Is no less than that made In other lines. The first definite lufor- maiion cs to what could be done to protect the apple and pear orchards from Trost Injury was not only ob tained la tho Rogue river valley, but tho forts were promptly published to tho world. At this time no less than two bulletins and porhaps a dozen papers have been published by P, J. O'Gara, pathologist and special meteorological observer, U. S. weath er bureau, who has been detailed to I study weather conditions in the ' Roguo river valley. As early as j 190S, when It was announced that ' frost could bo accurately forecasted aud that frost prevention was net only possible but practical, there were protests heard from all sides. Even those who should have been Interested In the matter from the scientific point of view declared It ! to be an Impossible thing. It was only after frost fighting had been thoroughly demonstrated as a sue- I cess that they decided to . mako a preliminary study. A3 a matter of fact, this district was the only one In tho northwost where even a pre- , Uminary study was possible, because no other district was equipped for tho work. Hulletlns Issued. The local weather bureau office has published Bulletin .o. 5 on the general practice of orctiard heating, nnd this Is being followod by Bulle tin No. C, which is devoted to a study of the fuol oils and appliances used In orchard boating In the north west. A complete study of local weather has been . made for the past four years, and, at this time, there is no section In tho United States where tbero Is a better knowledge of ther mal conditions during tho part of tho year whon frostu may be ex pected. It is co perfect that not a single orror lias been made In fore casting. We are told that tho meth ods are tho most perfoct known, al though there are a few, who know little about weather, who suggest that they may bo lmprovod. In go ing over tho rosults of the past yoar'a work, the failure to forecast tempera, tures accurately is ropresontod by a total of less than one-tenth of ono degree Fahrenheit. Orthardlxts Confident. To show that tho orchardlsts have confidence In tho work, It may bo said that thousands of dollars have been expended In orchard heaters, and other apparatus, and largo stor ugo tanka for tho fuol oils. One of the lurgest storngo tanks In tho United States built for orchard heat ing purposes was constructed by Mr. Dairying Uy KARL C. GADIHS. In presontlnc tho conditions and opportunities that, exist, relative to dairying In Bouthorn Oregon, It Is not tho Intention of tho writer to "paint with rosy hue'" tho rosults which have boeu attained In that lino, but rather to present tho possibilities of Jhls Important lino of business to those who might, bo Interested, and at tho Bamo time glvo n fow facts nnd figures ns to tho Income per cow that has' been rocolvod by dairymen of tho Rogito rlvor valley.
