N. V. In 18S0 his family moved to Colorado Spring, Col. Mr, Parsons rceehed his education in prlvnlo schools in the east and the University of California. While living in Colorado Springs Air. Parsons became interested m Kohl mininp in the Cripple Creek dist inct, which afforded an opportunity for a wide business experience. Sub sequent to his residence in Colorado Mr. Pardons engaged in the uuum faclunnt: busiucss with Bemis Broth ers Bap company at SU Iniis. From St. 'Louip he went to Bafi Francisco in tho interest of tho same company, and in 1904 removed to Seattle to establish n branch factory for the company. Mr. Parsons continued in the general management of the Se attle branch for several years, but the Inns of the land was always strong in hi? veins, his ancestors for several generations having been en gaged directly and indirectly hi hor ticulture, tl wrts natural, therefore. thtn this life should appeal to him, and he was particularly attracted to the Rogue river valley, in southern Oregon. He became principal owner of one of the largest and finc-t or ehnrds iu America the Hillcrest Or chard company, at Medford, Or. Iltllcrcit Orchard. The Hillcrest orchard, valued at between $400,000 and .foOO.OOO, Is one of the most famous in nil tlu world, nnd its brands are in eager request in all of tho principal con suming centers, being particularly well known iu New York nnd Lon don. The Hillcrest orchard brand ol Cornice pears holds the world's rcc ord in price for car lots. A car ol this brand was told in London tw years ago at an average of $10.0fc per box. This season a car of tm .nrne brand averaged $10 per bos 'flie IHHcrest orchard comprises 20o acres, of which 192 acres ure in trees and 158 acres in bearing. There art 105 acres of pears, including Bart lettfe, d'Anjous, Howells, Boscs, Win ter Nelis and Cornice, nnd the bal ance 87 acres are in apples, the principal variety being Yellow New towns, and the bnlnnco Spitzenbergs nnd other red varieties. There arc about 11,000 trees in this wonderful orchard, which is in tho highest state of bcientifio cultivation. In Mr. Par sons' o.l'fice nt Hillcrest are found every modem feature of orchard and accounting. There are maps of var ious kinds, some showing land con tour; water and nir drainage, etc.. and others showing the location and variety of even' tree of the eleven thousand. Mr. Partons is working on n pathological record by which he wiil'be able to trace the history of every tree in the orchard and keep a record of its bearing from year to year. The Hillcrest orchard has every modern mechanical appliance, Pnckiug houses, fire system and barns were built on the most modern lines. Mr. Parsons says modern orchard ry is practically manufacturing, and has busiucss is conducted according ly. It is his ambition to have the Hillcrest orchard pass, undivided, to his children and his children's chil dren, lie is not n land promoter or real estute operator iu any sense of tho -word, but a fruit grower first and lust. It hecamo apparent to him very soon after becoming interested m fruit growing that the wcukest side of the industry from tho grower' standpoint was tho assembling and marketing of tho fruit. Realizing the difficulties of the individual grower. no matter how large a producer he may bo, in meeting tho demands of the inoreusing supply of deciduous fruit produced in the nqithwest, In became instrumental in the formn tipu of tho Rogue River Fruit nnd Produce Associutipn at Medford. Mr. Par ous as president and other prom inent and public spirited fruit gtow ers. representing other ioiporta.it producing districts in the northwest, as officers and directors. The ex change bus met with, phenomenal Miec-s, having been carefully orga i ized nnd conducted with the view f efectine a wide distribution of tho fmit, which would permit tho a void -nice of the crowded oeiiters and thereby enable better prices to be ob tained. About seven hundred cars were put at the dUposnl of the ex change during its first season by various fruit grower associations, with results which have been univer sally gratifying to the growers. Mr. Parsons has cast his lot with the fruit growers and producers of the Northwest nnd is doing his best to aid in solving the problems connect ed with the industry, lie has given n great deal of tune to the direction of tho exchange and it success is largely duo to his public spirited work. In all of his previous business ex perience Mr. Parsons has shown his wide public spirit. Ho is n member of the Municipal League and Cham ber of Commerce of Seattle and di rector iu the Title Trust Compnny of that city. . Before leaving Seattle for Medford he was chairman of the "City Beautiful" and n member of various municipal committees en gaged in solving Mime of the more important municipal problems. NOTICE.
