RECIPR0G1TYWILL AID FRUIT GROWER Western Washington Orchardists Arc Told Canadian Market Is Just What They Nccy to Stimulate In dustry,' as It Will Create Demand. TACOMA, Wash., April 24. Wlillo Congressman La Follotte, militant In surgent, whoso district embraces ' tho lurgo whenlgrowlng septlon , of eastern Washington, Is steadfastly opposing tho ratlllcntlgn of tjio'Cnnudian reciprocity treaty, State Senator W. II. Faulhamus of I'lerco county, no less Insurgent Ih his politics, Is leading tho fruitgrowers or western Washington in a fight for tlie extension of the mnrket for their produce, which ho believes will follow the breaking down of tho tnrirf wall. Senator l'nulhamus, as president of the Piiyallup, & Sumner Fruitgrowers asso ciation, has a wldo Influence utnong tho furmerB of this state, and has done much toward putting the business on a prolltnlilo basis on tills sldo of tho mountains. He wants reciprocity with Canada, and ,ho believes that not only will It benefit tho fruitgrower, but will work to tho advantage of tho Wheat grower as well. "From a fruit standpoint," says Sen ator Paulhumus, "tho state of Washing ton is blind on twp sides. On tho west we have tho I'aclllc ocean, on tho north wo have tile Canudiun barrier. This leaves us hut two directions in which to (hid markets. On tho south wo havo Oregon and. California both of which arii also fruit specialists. Tho state of Washington Is a good mnrket for all tho fruit grown south of us, because It ripens earlier than our own. Owing tb the Canadian tariff, We do not havo tt market to tho north of us, as our neigh bors on ,tho south do, "To lily mind, the fruit Industry will soon bo tho cilef Industry of this state. If this bo true, wo should endeavor to open up tho greatest possible opportu nities to market our products. It must lie plain to overyono that tho best mar ket wo could possibly havo is in tho country to tho north of us, In which tho ripening season, Is correspondingly later tljun our own is later than Cali fornia. If It Is necessary to pay 11 eents duty per box on peaches, 30 cents on apples and CO cents on berrcls, wo can readily understand that consump tion will bo curtailed, but if this tariff Is removed, It will greatly Improve tho markotliig conditions. Tho chief argu ment against reciprocity Is that It will ndmlt Into tho stato farm products which will compete with tho farm prod ucts of Washington. I can conceive of no Canadian grown farm products that will seriously lnterfero with us. Wo arc not marketing our wheat In Canada; Camulu can never market her wheat In this state." CITY NOTICES.
