One Dime Ko Mure One Dime. TIIIC Portlnnd hog is ff"i i evidence. Cities of Oi'CKon numt not be allowed to develop i Ivti flier interfere with the trade of the metropolis. i The 'jobbers of Portland have intervened in railroad, rule eases brought by iWedford and Baker City for fear these towns become 'jobbing centers. t Tlwi Hiir.iiniifi i)len is made that the intervention is mi behalf of flrnnts Pass, Ashland, Rosebnrg and other cit-( ies. Nonsense. Portland jobbers will fight these towns jnst as hard as fhev are fighting Medfoi'd and Baker City the minute thev slCow signs of life. Portland is the most short-sighted metropolis in the Union. Her efforts at developing the stale consist of hot ail' and exacting all the tribute the traffic will bear, eheck-i ing the opening of other harbors and frying to impede the growth of little towns. Portland loses sight of the fact that no pari of Oregon can grow without Portland receiving the benefit; that the larger Med ford, Maker City and Coos- Bay become the larger Portland's business. Portland fails to grasp the essential fact that even part of Oregon must be aided and assisted in oxevy way possible; that the growth of all the liftle cities means the greater growth of Portland; that none of the little cities means or can mean commercial rivalry; that they furnish the onlv possible market for Portland manufacturers. What is the use of holding development league meet ing to devise ways and means of developing Oregon, when the metropolis is seeking to prevent development? The Southern Pacific would probably be willing to grant rates asked by Mcdford did it not fear the ant agon ism of the shipping interests of Portland, with their im mense commercial and political influence. And if tin rail road granted the rates, Porlkind would probably enjoin fhem. Suppose Med ford wins her contentions and is recog nized as a .lobbing centep; would it not lurtlier increase Portland's importance? YVould not her manufactures be jobbed from here? Would not her great jobbing houses put branches in, as they have at Lewiston and elsewhere, md find it far more profitable to cover this region from Medford than from distant Portland? Would not her mar kets, her influence and prestige be still further increased It would force Portland capital to assist in the upbuilding of this and ofher'sections of Oregon, where it is conspic uous by its absence. The interference in the rate cases is by the traffic com mittee of the Portland chamber of commerce. It is most ly composed of jobbers. It is doubtful if Portland man ufacturers or Portland at large sanctions it. Such ac tions undo all the laborious work of years toward co-op-raiion in other channels. There is one way to bring tho Portland jobbers to terms, and that is by boycott. If every Med ford shipper ut out Portland, bought from San Francisco or Seattle, here would be a special excursion of jobbers down to uljust matters.. Before, this step is taken every dealer "ihould write his Portland jobbers protesting the action, md if this fails, resort to the boycott. Portland's fool policy of butting into every rale hear ing in a radius of 500 miles to protest against demanded reductions in order to hog the field has accomplished noth ing save to make enemies. Her contentions in the Spokane ind other rates cases counted for naught, nor will it avail in the present case.
