O'Brien Is one of the Incorpo- aters Company Is Capitalized at D.OOO Was Recently Made four of Inspection. PORTLAND, Or., Aug. 23. An kortant step toward giving i'ort- direet rail connection with tue ihorn Orecron and northern Cnli- liia. coast was divulged yesterday n articles of incorporation of the Ints Pass & Western were filed Ihe office of the county clerk. The rporators are J. P. O'Brien, gen- manager of the Hnrrininn lines )regon; C. G. Sutherland, chief in the office of the general ntier. anu James u. miton. one :he Harrimon interest attorneys. s it will ho seen that the line will n iv part of the his Ilurriuiuii fem. he capital stock of the company riven as .$500,000, and the pur- s ,of the corporation is to build operate a railroad line between scent City, Cal., and Grants Puns. r. distance is about 70 miles. The J will tap some rich timber, min- atid agricultural lands in Joseph and Curry counties, Oregon, and Norte county, Cal. it will give! ndid outlet for the product of the ous redwood forests of Del Norte the mines of Josephine countv, iron. .Development liecu Retarded. or years development of these perties has been retarded because ock of transportation facilities. It iredicted that with the building of projected road vast virgin dis- s will bo thrown open with zing rapidity. The forests in ry county and the agricultural horticultural possibilities there of such magniturc, too, that with I completion of the railroad that son of the state will at once ig into great prominence. liout four months ago the country lgh which the line is to pass was roughly inspected by General Eager O'Brien and Traffic Man- R. B. Miller, but upon his return tho trip Mr. O'Brien said that iguificance should be attached dm trip because it was only in nature of a vacation, the trip tig been made in auto from its Pass. ITo expressed himself lery favorably impresed with the try and its beautiful natural ro- ees and opportunities for dovel- Ijneral Manager O'lhien nun no Manager Miller are both out Je.city today, Mr. O'Brien having Southern Pacific line and Mr. Millar having gone east on business. Mr. Sutherland refused to be in xerviewed, explaining that his name figured in the articles simply as an employe of the company. "Any information in this connec tion will have to come from Mr. O'Brien," said Mr. Sutherland, "and Mr. O'Brien is out of the city todny. The papers have been filed, and be yond that I have nothing to say." Important to Portland. People closely acquainted with conditions along the const say that thi new branch of the Southern Pa cific will be most important to Port lend from a commercial point of view, for it will bring within reach a large territory now served with dif ficulty by San Francisco. Occas ional hteamers ply between the Bay City and Crescent City, but aside from that the immense country' Hes entirely isolated. A coast line extends north as far a Trinidad, a few miles north of Eureka, the most prominent city alcng the northern California coast, out it is held that even with this line extended to Crescent City, Portland will be at an advantage ns a trading iJoint for cities of the south. In Josephine county the line will be of .immense benefit to tin mining districts, which have been developing slowlv because of their inaccessibil ity. But with a railroad through the very heart of the district rapi I le vclnninent !; bound to follow. Jindit BULBS Exclusive Agency for Portland Seed Co. Medford Greenhouee Phone 3741 School Book Notice No credit will be allowed to any one on school books. A deposit must be Jeft in ad vance or cash paid on delivery. Medford Book Store is believed that the company looks for a large share of traffic from these mining properties-. Curry county is perhaps the most1 neglected section 'of the state, for even today, though one of the richest in point of natural resources to the area, for it has not a mile of railroad i nor connection by water with lite outside world, except an occasional visit by one of the Miinll gasoline sloops that ply along the coast. The towns of Gold Bench and Wed derbum. at the mouth of Rogue river, have been buying in the Port land market off and on for the past! several years, but oiilv when this was' made )ossible through the departure fqr Portland by one of the little sloops operated in connection with the Hume ennnery interests. But an idea of the service furnished y these sloops may be gained from the fni.t that sometimes they would make the round trip in six weeks, while next trip it would perhaps take twice ns long, the time depending entirely on weather and wind. SAYS STONE IS NOT UNBIASELTIN CASE SAN FRANCISCO, Cnl., Aug. 24. Virtually accusing United Stntcs Senator William J. Stone of .Missouri, chairman of the "third degree" in vestigating committee with assuming the role of persecutor instead of un biased investigator, Attorney Lewis Boardmun, representing United States District Attorney Devlin, whose conduct in the I'crrin ense is being investigated, created a sensa tion that almost cnused the session to break up in a row. Boardman's accusation followed Senator Stone's refusal to hear charge against United States Dis trict Attorney Piatt of Nebraska, whom Boardmaii declared is guilty of the same offense, charged ngainst Devlin that of forcing an indictment through the grand jury.
