Mrs. Addio O. Vial, daughter of Fred Mlakely of lioseburg, and Miss Hattio Smith were drowned in the North Viupoun river at Winches ter, six miles north of lioseburg. Sunday evening. Miss Mlakely and Miss Smith were riding with two young men in a small boat some o00 foot above the dam across the North Umpipia at Win chester, which furnishes the electric power for lioseburg. From the reports of oyowit nosi.es it seems that tho seats in the boat woro improvised and thnt the hoard upon which Miss Smith wa sitting lipped from its support and caused her to fall sidewise. This caused the boat to capstzo, and as the current is strong above tho dam and the river at this season quite high, the party was swept toward the dam. The men managed to roach shore af ter strenuous exertions, but neither of tho girls were seen after the cap sizing of tho boat. After a conference lasting four days the Rogue River Canal Com pany, successors to the Fish Lake Ditch Company and Mr. Hanley ar rived at a satisfactory understanding regarding tho water rights on Littlo Butte and this places Mr. Hanley In a position to make the city an offer.
