Its stated ob ject is to win for women, first in California and then throughout the United States, the right to the bal lot. ' The organization' was launched yesterday at a luncheon at n loenl hotel. Nearly half a hundred men, well known in Los Angeles and vicin ity, wero present. John Brnley, a Pasadena capitalist, wns chosen president, while the board of direct ors includes Lee C. Harthmlcr of North Fork by Getting Onto Scheme. SAN FRANCISCO, Cal.. April C. Tho vigilance of the officials of tho Medford, Or., National bank was tho cnuso of Mike Golden's notorious bunco crane losinir $5000 which it I r r a- wns about to take away from I. (Hnrthmier, n wealthy farmer of Spo kane, Wash. Tho bank incidentally saved Hnrthmier a good deal more than $5000, as tho wealthy Gorman did not believe ho wns being buncoed when rescued by tho Pinkertons and still insisted that he was going to ac cumulate a fortuno playing Gulden's fnkc racing game. ITarthrnicr came to Snn Frnncisco in tho early part of March. Ho went about town seeing tho sights and wns soon tnken in tow by one of Gold- en's stcercrs and enticed to a fake poolroom on Ellis street, near Fill more. Puts Up Check. The enpper who introduced himself ns"n. Meyer," showed tho farmer how he could get rich quick by bet ting on sure-thing races. Tho capper put up a "phony" $5000 check and ITarthmicr put up a good one for the same amount. Through somo bad management tho horse the two bet on won. Hnrthmier wns ohorjoyed and wanted to cash in nt once. The bunco gang told him that the genu ineness of his check would hnvo to be established beforo ho could he paid. The Bnnco men retained the check and put it through for collection. The paper was drawn on the Medford Na tional bank and when the bnnk wns queried by n locnl institution, where the check had been presented for payment tho Medford bank officinls became suspicious nnd wired back to delay payment until nn investigation conld bo made. Fearing gthat Hnrthmier wns in the hands of thieves, tho Medford bank sent a man post haste down here. Plnkcrtons Help. The aid of tho Pinkertons was on listcd and nft6r detectives from that agency hnd located tho bunco gnng, Detective McHugh of the local force was sent out with them to recover the check. "J. F. VHlson," who made his headquarters at 1551 Ellis street, was found to have the check. Tho enso was "squared" nnd "Wilson re turned the check.. No attempt was made by McHugh or tho PinkertoiiB to arrest tho bunco men nnd Hnrth mier was compelled to pny $400 to someono beforo ho could gcgt his check back. The bank representative succeed ed in getting Hnrthmier out of town and beforo leaving said some harsh things about "our rotten police de partment." Golden has been operating in San Francisco and his gang is part of n "system" that has engaged in busi ness in four cities of tho Pacific coast, Seattle, Portland, San Fran cisco and Los Angeles. Recently this gnng wns in part driven from Port land, nnd on arrival at Son Francisco had some difficulty fixing mnttor up. Prior to its departure letters wero exchanged with certain "stand ins" in tho buy city, nnd through n prominent polico offieinl tho bunk wero promised immunity. Mr. narthmicr is from North Fork. Mr. Merrick, who represented tho bnnk, accompanied him to San Fran cisco and aided in thwarting tho plans of tho crooks. Tho statements made by McHugh of tho San Fran- BLESSINGS OF Los Angoles has been trying to In duce her two telephono companies to oxchange sorvlco, bo that a subscrib er to either ono of them will get a wholo telephono Instead of only a half a ono. At present, whoovor wishes a complete telephone one, that Is, by which ho can roach all other telephone subBcrlbora must rent an Instrument from both compa nies, and not only pay two rentals, bue bo driven distracted by running to the wrong telephone, or discover ing that the number ho la clamoring for In a hurry belongs to tho other system. Tho money loss to tho city through maintaining two systems which In part merely duplcato each othor, nnd which together furnish a much lees satisfactory service than might be bad from a slnglo, comprehensive sys tem, baa been estimated at a largo sum. GREAT EVENING OF GRAND OPERA Greatest Musical Treat in History of City Lambardl Troupe Dclluhtcd Local Thcaternocrs Somo Great Voices Wero Heard. (BY E. M. ANDHEWS.) The elito turned out lust night to celobrato Medford's first attempt at Italinn grand opera. Tho house wns packed from orchestra pit to tho lust seat in tho gallery and the crowd know whon nnd where to npplautl. Their appreciation was not moroly make-believe it was real. It is safe to say thero is no othor town in America the siro of Medford that would patronuo so liberally nnd ap preciate so thoroughly the highest typo of musical nrt. As to tho company, it is n pity that young singers hnvo to sing tho bloom off from their voice beforo tUo world is ready to crown thorn us king and queon of song. The writor of this article has mndo mttsio his lifo bus iness, has heard most all of tho great nrtists that have appeared in this country. 1 hnvo heard "Cnvallerin" given nt tho Metropolitan opera houso in Now York with Cnlvo in th leading soprano role, and to say that Mine. Bosetti gnvo tho greatest in terpretation of Santurzn thnt tho writer hns over witnessed in his lifo is only doing tho lady justico nnd stating n modost fact. Somo dny Bosetti will bo numbered among tho Motropolitnn or nnramcrstein cast and wo will henr her voico on tho Red Spnl records nnd mention with pride our hnving heard her whon in the enst. But tho little lady still has tho bloom upon hor voice and the strength nnd fire of youth in her veins. Sho is fighting tho hnrd, hard fight for first place, and when sho hns worked, and worked, oh. so hard, she will somo dny find horself world famous nnd then sho will sny, "Why do they applaud me with such en thusiasm now. I deserved it eight or ten years ngo, but now I nm tired." Well, wo have heard Bosetti nt her best, oven though her name 5b not montioned in tho lists with Mclba, Calve and others. Turriddu was plaved by Scala brini. Ho is n young tenor, but pos sesses n benuttful voice, and, like his brothers of sunny Italy, ho hns tho temperament Tho work of sing ing two tonor roles in ono ovoning, so trying as thoso of "Cnvnlloria" nnd "Pnglincci," is renlly moro thnn one tenor should attempt, no saved him self a bit in "Cnvallerin" for his sec ond performance and whnt a part he did make of Caniol His grcnt sccno nt tho close of the first net wns something that Medford will remem ber. Alfio wns played by Pompeo Elena, nc is a good baritone, n young mnn with much promise. But tho great baritone wns Giusoppo Mnggi. Mr. Maggi has won fnmo ns tho bnritono of Covent Garden, Lon don, no gave us n groat perform ance of Tonio. no is a finished ar tist in every respect nnd ono capable of stepping in Seotli's place at any timo nnd filling the plnco thoroughly. Miss Ginnn in the part of Lola in "Cavnlloria" and Arlccchino in "Pnglincci," did both parts exceed ingly well. Mmo. Ester Adeborto snng tho pnrt of Ncdda in a irtinnor that showed her to bo nn artist cn- pablo of a greater pnrt. While Neddn is n splendid character, yet It does not give tho opportunity for intensity of voice nnd action thnt somo of the more pprotcntious rolos cisco police force against tho bnnk nro without foundation. Tim pojico force "stood in" wilt tho crooks, nnd it wns tho Pinkertons thnt nided in exposing tho game COMPETITION Tho city thought tho first tolo phono company chargod too much. Tho only remedy It know was tho an cient panacea of competition to got up a second company that would fight the first one, with duplication of plants that would wasto generally. We should not feel called upon to mention Lob Angeles' case unless Ita moral wore protty wldoly applicable. Wo read with pain that some good senators are suspicious of tho admin istration railroad bill because they think It may lessen competition among tho roads, Ot course the Inr proroment of railroad sorvlco In this country has been exactly coincident with the docllno of competition. Wo hnvo got bettor servlco and lower rates Just about In proportion as tho roads havo stopped fighting and sub mitted to public regulation, In that way only will still bettor service and lowor ratos be bad.
