Tbo Pro feasor In all the great College ore reprobating tho Utblo and openly laugh at tho thought of finding there either broad for tho hungry or water tor tho thlrfy. This Is the very picture given la our context "Thoy ehnll-wnnder from sen to aoa, from the North oven to tho Eait; they ahall run to and fro to nook tle Word of tho Lord and shall not find It. In that day shall tho fair Tir Bins nnd tho young men faint for thirst" (Amos ylll, 12, 13). Th. Bread of Lift and Water of Ufa. These hungry hearts must loam that there lu only tho ono Hatlsfylng portion under tho Bun tho living and true God, and Jesus Christ whom bo has sent to bo tho Dread of Life for tbo world, and tho mcssago of grnco from his lips to bo tbo Wntcr of Life. It In ours to cnll tbo nttcntlon of this Truth hungry clans to tho Croat Teacher who declared, "My flesh Is food Indeed and my blood Is drink Indeed; except yo cat tho llcsli of tho Son of Mnn, nnd drink bis blood, yo bavo no llfo lu 70U" (John vl, 55, 53), Hut scarcely will the Intelligent of our day henrkon to tuouo words, so prejudiced nro their minds by tho fallacies which becloud tholr undorfltnndlng, Thoy sco not, neither do thoy understand tbo good ness of Cod. Why Is this? Why arc thcao Bible In millions of homes, Cnthollc and rrotestnut, neglected? lleonuuo tbo pcoplo know not tlmt tho bread of life aud tho wator of llfo which thoy nook aro blddou therein. Why Is this? Wo answer that conditions wero very much tho sumo In Israel at tho time of our Lord's Flint Advent. Tho ox planatlou ho then guvo Is applicable now. Ho said, "Vo do niako void tho Law of God through your traditions" "tho tradttloim of tho ancients" (Mark Til, 13; I Peter I, 18). Ho now, tbo traditions hnndod down from our fore fathers really mnko void, nionnlngloss, ungracious, tho mossngo of God's Wis dom nnd Lovo sent to us through tho Lord, tho apostles and tho prophets. Those who still hold tennclously to tbo croeds of tho past nro thoroughly blinded now to tbo truo teachings of God's Word, while, nlas, the majority -of the independent thlukors, In reject- 'A FAMINE IN THE LAND "I will p-nd (mint in die land I not (mint of tirruf, nor iliirtt (or wlT, but ul liraring I do woidi ol ilia Loid" (Amoi viii. II). lug the dogmas of tbo piiNt, Imvo re jected the Hlblo nlno, believing that the teachings of tbo creed truthfully represent God's W.ord. Tbeo are wnn derlng hither and thither, hungering aud thirsting, looking for tbo bread of llfo and wnter of llfo, nnd finding It nowhere, beeatiHo they seek not where nlono It Is to bo found. "Ho, Evtry On That Thirtieth, Corrte Yo." Hot Yo nil tlmt hunger for Truth, Come ye. There Is nn nbundnnco for us all lu our Heavenly Fathers won derful jirovlHlon In tho Hlble. Desert lug all tbo croeds nnd traditions of men, let us giithor at our Heavenly I'nl her' Hoard ns bis family, as his children. Let u proro the truthful tie of bis declaration tlmt "Like as a father pltleth bis children, so (ho Lord p(tleth them that reverence blui." Let 11 seek nnd obtnlu the satisfying por tion. Ut us nntlsfy our longlngfl at thu table of Divine provision. Mark tbo Lord's words aud consider how truthful thoy nre, "Messed nro thoy tlmt hunger nnd thirst after righteous- neKs, for they shall bo filled" (Matthew v, 0). It Is this Truth-hungry class that wo addrc. Wo know tbelr heart-longings, for wo bnd the same. Wo know tho satisfaction which they crave, for wo have roeelved It nnd nn therefore doubly glad to baud forth the bread of llfo and tho water of life to those who delre It. Thero are plenty ready to servo the appetites of thono who long for pleasure ball games, society fetes, chess, travel, etc. Wo bnve not a wonl to say ngnlnst these. It Is not our thought that thoy uro going to etenial torment; henco wo do not frantically beet them, annoy them. Ict them bavo their pleasure. Let them wait for tho time to como when something may occur lu Uiwlr experience which will put them Into tho class of the broken-hearted nnd contrite of spirit and cause them to feel after God, If Imply they might Hud him ns a satisfying portion. In harmony with tbo Master's direction. It 1 our nlm to "bind up the broken hearted: to comfort those that mourn;" to tell them of the oil of Joy which tbo Lord U willing to bestow for their spirit of hcnvlucA nnd sorrow for sin (Iiutlntf Ixl, 1-.1). As the Mntcr ex pressed 110 reproof of lboo engaged In any form of mornl reform, even nscctlcUm, so It Is with us. Wo desire to oppose no ono who Is doing nny good work, whether ho follow with us In every particular or n6t- Thero are so many engaged In doing ovll works, and so few engaged In doing good, that not ono of tho Intter class can bo spared from tho ranks of tho service of righteousness. As tho Master did not give his time to tomperanco roforuij nor social re form, nor political reform, but did glvo hla tlmo to tbo Instruction of the pcoplo In tbo doctrines of tbo Divine Word, so let us bo Intent to follow his Instruction in this matter, not teaching for doctrines tbo precepts of men, but the Word of God, which ltv eth and abldoth forever expounding unto tho people tbo Scriptures aud as sisting thorn to seo tho length and breadth of their meaning. Novertho los. as tbo rollgloun teachers of tho Master day hated Jesus nnd his dis ciples for this cause, "Hecausa they taught tho people," nnd persecuted thorn becnuso they did not walk In tho boatou paths of tbelr day, so wo mny expect nlso to bo hated without cause; so wo may oxpect that tbo scribes aud Pharlsoes and Doctors of tho Law today will bo grieved becuuso tho pcoplo nro taught, becnuso tbo light of tho kuowledgo of tho glory of God shining In tbo faco of Jesus Christ Is presented to tho pcoplo as nn In conttvo to lovo nnd obedience, Instead of tbo doctrine of eternal torment. It mnttors not Mint all tho educated min istry today well know, nnd would not for a moment deny, tholr disbelief lu tho doctrine of otornnl torment, If cross-quoutloued, Nevertheless many of them bate us nnd oppose us, be cnuso wo show tho pcoplo tho truo Interpretations of God'e Word, and lift boforo tbo eyes of tholr understand ing n God of Lovo, Just, Merciful, nightcous altogether, and fully enpa bio both In wisdom and power to work out all tho glorious designs which bo "purposed In himself boforo the foun dation of the world:" (1) Thoy perceive that tho teaching of tbo doctrines of Purgatory nnd eter nal torment has not had a sanctify ing Influence upon mankind In nil tho sixteen centuries In which It has boon prenciiod. Thoy fenr that to deny these doctrines now would mnko n bad matter worso. They fear that If tbo Gospol of tlio Lovo of God and of tho Hlble that It does not tench eter nal tormont for nny wero mndo gon ornlly known, the effect upon tho world would bo to Increase Its wicked ness, to mnko llfo and proporty loss sccuro than now nnd to till tho world HtlU more tbnn now with blaspbomtos, (2) Thoy fenr nlso tlmt a cortnln amount of discredit would como to tbomselVos bocnuso, knowing that the Hlblo does not teach eternal torment, according to tho Hebrow nnd Greek, original, thoy secroted tho knowledge from tho pooplo. Thoy fear that this would forever discredit them with tbelr hearers. Hence thoy still out wardly lend their lullueiico to tbo doc trines of eternal (otture, whlWt they do not believe, nnd feel angry towards us beeatiHo wo teiirb tho people tho Truth upon the Mibjort, which they know will bring to theiu hundreds of Uestlons dllllcult to answer or dodgo, Ood's Love Conitralneth Ut. I ask you, dear renderg, Wero you constrained to become children of Oml nnd to render to the Iord thu homage and tho obedience of your lives through fenr or through lovo? I am not asking you whether you never Imvo f cored; but I am nsklng you what brought you to tho point of con secrating your llfo to God? Surely that was not four! I am aware, of course, that there Is a proper, godly fear, rovereuce, and that the Kcrlp tures dochiro It "Tho fear (rever ence) of tho Iml Is tho beginning of wlHdom" (l'Hiilm cxi, 10). Hut this Is not tho fear of eternal torment, which tends to drive out love. How could wo lovo or entocm or truly worship n fbxl purimHlug tho eternal torment of his creatures from before tbelr crea tion? I could glvo you many proof of tbo power of lovo over tho human heart. In contrast with tbo ungodly fenr of the error. God says to u In so many words, "Their fear toward me Is not of me, but I taught by the precepts of men," As nn Illustration: At a Hlblo Students' Convention not long ngo lu Ohio n well-dressed gentleman lu at tendance told mo of bow bis heart bnd been touched with our prcsenbitlons of tho "Lovo Divine, nil love excelling." Ho anld, "For years I bavo been a member of tho Presbyterian Church without being really a Christian at all. Occasionally I went ou sprees; some times I gambled and drank, etc., etc. Not until I received a knowledge of tho truo character of God as set forth In your 'Scripture Studies' did my heart ever como to tho proper attltudo of surrender to tbo Lord. Thou I was glad to glvo him my little nil, and wished It wero more." The next day, pnsslug from the hotel to the audi torium ton question meeting, this gen tleman put a slip of paper Into my hand, which I supposed was a ques tion, and I thrust Into my coal pocket. Ou tho platform I drew It forth ns one of tbo questions to be answered, nnd, to my astonishment, found it wns a check for $1,000. The man bud uot been nsked for ono cent; but the I.ovo of God bad captivated his heart aud gotten control uot only of It, but of bis pocket-book nnd all. Ho wished to xhow tho Lord bis appreciation of the Love Divine, tho length nnd hrvndtb nnd height aud depth, of which he now comprehended, ns never before. Another ense: I met with a Conven tion of Hlblo Students In Chattanooga some live year ngo. A gentleman at tended who lutnxluced himself to mo saying that be was from Mississippi uud (but be had become deeply Inter os ted lu my presentations of tho har mony of tho Word of God. He said In substance: "Hrothcr Hussell, I will uot uttcuipt to tell you bow wicked a man I was before I got your literature. My dear wife here, au earnest Metho dist, said to me, 'John, John, you will surely go to hell!' I replied to her, 'Mary, I know It! I know It! And, Mary, I am determined that I will de serve all that I get. I am uot going to hell for nothing. One of your tracts enmo to my desk lu my store. I said tlmt this wns different from nnythlng I over understood respecting tbo teach ings of the nible. It seems mora God like nnd more rational. I sent to you for various Hlble Students' Helps. Tbo result, dear Hrotber Russell, la that the Love of God has constrained mo, has conquered me, In a way that tho doc trines of devilish torments could not Influence me. Now I seo tho truo teaching of God's Word. I can honor htm and worship him and tako pleas ure In laying down my llfo In his serv ice. I have made a full consecration of everything, For n time I sent you a 50 check every month; but, nrother ItUBsoll, that was lu the nature of conscience-money, because the most prof itable feature of my store trndo was tbo ante of liquor to tho, Mississippi negroes, Tboso checks stopped, be cnuso, ns tbo grnco of God moro nnd more filled nnd overflowed my heart,. It brought mo to seo that I must lovo my neighbor ns myself and do injury to none. That Is nil gono now, Brother Russell, nnd my wholo llfo Is devott-d to tho servlco of God nnd my fellow men." Threo murderers confined In tho Co lumbus, Ohio, Ponltcnttnry had from childhood been trained lu tho doc trluos of eternal torment In different churches nnd yet committed murder. Tboso mon, unden God's provldenco, received somo of our llternturo "Scrip turo Studies" aud wero cut to the henrt when they learned of tho Lovo of God, ns expressed In tho Divine Plan of tho Agos. To bo brief: A knowledgo of the Lovo of God inado such n chnngo In tho hearts nnd lives of those three murderers that tbo prison-keepers took knowledge of them that thoy had been with Jesus nnd had learned of him. Hy nnd by they wero pnrolod and today two of them nro preaching tho Gospel of tho Love of God, seeking to bring their fellow- men out of the condition of darkness nnd sin Into tho glorious sunlight of Dtvluo Lovo und Truth, nnvlng tried thu Gospol of fear nnd damnation and torture for sixteen centuries; having seen that under this teaching thero nro moro blasphemy and general wicked ness than oven In tho heathen world, Is it not duo tlmo to glvo the truo bread nnd wnter of llfo to tho hungry nnd thirsty ones who, for lack of It, nro sonrchtug tho earth and many of thorn falling Into nighcr Criticism, In fidelity aud other delusions peculiar to our day?
