Indicates that the culture of peppermint would bo successful on the Oregon beaverdam soil. mree ktnus of peppermint are grown In the United States black mint (Mentha piperita vulgaris), American mint (Mentha piperita) anad white mint (Mentha piperita of fclnialis). The black mint is hard iest, yields more oil and Is used very largely by peppermint growers. White mint yields r. high grade, much priz ed oil. Japan is said to have first culti vated tho peppermint plant for the ooil and the records chow It was grown In this country before the Christian era. Tho plant was also early cultivated in Engl.":d and a fin0 grade of oil. the "Mltcham" oil. fs still produced there. In 1S1G pep permint was first grown in America i a large scale In Wayne county, i sessment of the cost thereof as afore said, and said council having consid ered fhe matter, and deeming that said water main was and Is of mater ial benefit to said city, and that all property to be assessed therefor would be benefited thereby to the extent of the probable amount of the respective assessments to be levied against said property, did order said water main laid. And whereas, the cost of said wa ter main has been and hereby is de termined to bo the sum of $893.70 N'ow. therefore, it is hereby fur ther determined that the propor tionate share of the cost of laying said water main of each parcel of the property fronting on said portion of said street is tho amount set op posite the description of each par cel or piece of land below and that each piece or parcel of land benefited ! by the laying of snld water main to the full extent of the amount so set opposite tho description of each par cel or piece, and that the respective amounts represent the proportional benefit or said water main to said respective parcels of property, and also the proportional frontage there of on said portion of said street, and the council does hereby declare each of the parcels of property described below to b assessed and each of tho same hereby Is assessed the amount set opposite each description of tho cost of laying said water main. Assessment for a four-inch water main on Mistletoe street, between New York, which Is still a producing M.a'n street West and Tenth street district. Later the plant was intro duced into Michigan and Indiana, the former state being at present the largest producer of the oil in this country. Ic Is estimated that It costs from $10 to $20 an acre to cultivate tho mint and from 25c to 35c per pound fs tho price paid for distilling the solol at the central distilling plants. whfch aro established in the pepper- mfnt districts.
