WEST 9 U VOTE iS 1652 TO 428 HOOD Riltfi tlTKEIIS ARE JUBILANT Hay, Grain, Mill Feed [Special to Oregonian.] Hood River Ore., July 11.—By a vote of 1952 to 128 the people Storage and Forwarding of Hood River county today au Agency for thorized a bond issue of $75.000 for completion of the Columbia River highway in Hood River county. All o f the 12 precincts in the county, with the excep Mosier. - - - Oregon tion o f Dee, a thinly populated district, voted big majorities for the bonds. Tonight the citizens turned out en masse and seldom in the annals of the city has such jubi I n i— ■ la n rirK a M H O M B i lation been shown over an elec tion of any kind. The cornet band headed a parade in which 1000 of the principal residents ot the county took part and each person seemed intent on making MOSIER, OREGON more noise than his neighbor. 3 A P IT A L A N D S U R P L U S $ 1 1 .7 0 0 .0 0 A large percentage of the citi zens of the upper valley districts, DEPOSIT YOUK SAVINGS IN who have l>een indifferent to the A CAREFULLY M A N A G E D BANK. election, failed to attend the polls. It will be money that would not he expended in Hood River county but for the completion o f the Hood River link of the Columbia River High- ! way. In Multnomah county alone, there are upwards of 8000 auto mobiles and motorcycles. As the beauties of the journey become known there will hardly he one owner of a vehicle who will not cover the trip at least once a sea son. Many will make the jour ney several times. Without a doubt regular sightseeing trips will lie inaugurated for visitors and those who are not fortunate enough to possess their own cars. Add to this the tourist travel attracted by the spreading fame of the Columbia River Highway and it is not difficult to forecast immediate benefits. A small ex penditure by each traveler will make up the $75,000. And they are benefits exclusive of those that will accrue to a community that has latent opportunities, once such opportunities are pre sented to the appreciative eye. The Oregonian has heretofore said that the character of the road work required ami the pe culiar situation o f Hood River county would justify state aid in the building of its portion of the highway. But an acceptable substitute for state aid is now offered. S. Benson guarantees that tiie bond proceeds amount- Old papers for sale at this ing to $75,000 will com plete the work. BAKERY M o s ie r , - - Sherman county experienced one o f the worst storms in its history last Sunday, when wind and hail damaged crops to the extent o f a quarter o f a million dollars. A special to the Orego nian from Moro says: Property and crop damage running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars was done in Sherman county on the east side of the Deschutes valley Sunday night when three distinct storms, either as cloud-bursts or of heavy hail, left a path of devastation through hundreds of acres of growing __ grain. I he damage to crops in this coun “ " ‘ y i» estimated as high as a quar ter of a million dollars, in dividual farmers losing entire grain crops on tracts ranging from 640 to 900 acres. The Sherman county storms were more severe in the Monk- land district, cast o f Moro, where a severe rain tell; in the Shearar grade district, where a cloud burst sent down a deluge of water, and in a stretch of terri tory two miles wide reaching from Kent to the John Day Riv er east of Rutledge. Standing grain, ready for har vest, was mowed down and ren dered entirely worthless, altho much unripened grain escaped without severe damage. Threshing was in progress in the Monkland district when the storm broke, hut the workers were compelled to seek shelter, leaving the cut grain at the mer cy o f the elements. The uncut whoat was stripped of I lie stand ing heads wherever the storm’ s fury was felt. Reports from Shearar grade district are meager and the ex tent o f the damage done there is not available. The hail storm that swept from Kent to Rutledge broke about two miles from Buck Hollow and rushed, with awful damage to all crops in its path, in a north easter I v direction. ! m o s ie r OREGON To meet your friends, stop at A TREAT to try Francisco’s delicious and refreshing -n . ¡ ••y- the very • • es: i r . l’ uri ¡y, (g • IV 11 si ,!. i . cedei H '-, a ■ il ! «• lia vor. mu!. • - t tlie î ' h . - i uninier .fri: .. \ ill l.olh old m i young.
