D ayton, O.— The W rig h t B rothers, aeroplane inventors and aviators, are highly gratified w ith th e re su lts of th e ir recen t experim ents w ith th eir new g lid er a t K itty H aw k, N. C. They believe th a t th e experim ents conducted th ere w ill have a vital in fluence on the fu tu re of aerial tra n s portation. The clim ax o f the plodding, pains ta k in g te s ts occurred when O rville W rig h t caused his m otorless biplane to hover over a spot only 15 fe e t in d iam eter fo r m ore than 10 m inutes. “ O ur experim ents have been very sa tisfa c to ry ,’’ said O rville W right, discussing his flight. "T h e y have been fa r beyond my expectations. I w ent to K itty H aw k sim ply to carry out some ideas I had w orked o u t here a t home concerning glid in g m achines. As a m a tte r o f fa c t I w as not very o p tim istic about extensive success. B ut a fte r I had rearran g ed a num ber o f details, I succeeded in keeping the c ra f t in the a ir fo r such a long period. O ur success is due to the fa c t th a t the c ra ft is exceptionally efficient. By efficientncy, I m ean th a t all its parts are balanced so as to m ake a p erfect liftin g vehicle. “ W hen an a v iato r speaks o f effi ciency, he m eans th e cap ab ility o f an aeroplane to fly w ith the le a st am ount o f m otive power. He has in m ind the soaring q u alities o f an aeropane. I can tru ly say th a t our c ra f t is enor mously efficient. I don’t m ean to claim th a t we can fly w ith o u t power, but I do meBn th a t our m achine can fly w ith less pow er than any other. “ U nder certain conditions I am cer ta in th a t the ideas we have developed d u ring the p a st few w eeks would en able us to build a m achine which would fly even w ith less horse power. I know th a t we could fly fo r an hour w ithout pow er, given proper atm os pheric conditions, and I see no reason why we connot fly fo r 10 hours if we have flown one m inute. I t is sim ply a question of th e tim e, th e place, th e wind and the m achine. “ In o rd er to m ake ex ten siv e pow er less flights, how ever, th e c ra f t would have to be b u ilt m ore strongly. A t th e p resen t tim e such construction is now economical. O wing to the s ta te of th e skill of aviators it would cost them too much to pay fo r the freq u en t breakage of an expensive c ra ft. “ B u t I don’t w ish to give the im pression th a t I think the p resen t m a chine in use is defective. I t is my opinion th a t our la te type o f biplanes is about as good as any c ra f t w ill be for m any y ears to come. I t flies w ith less pow er than any c ra f t in ex isten ce; it is stro n g and durable, and it is susceptible o f alm ost p e rfe c t con trol. W hen some of th e th in g s I have discovered here a re incorporated in the c ra ft, I don’t think i t w ill easily be surpassed. “ I d o think th a t th e fu tu re o f the aeroplane depends to a certain e x te n t upon the fu tu re of th e m otor. N ot th a t I w an t to say th a t the present m otor is lacking in any serious m an ner. I th in k th e m otor of the present is ju s t as p e rfe c t as the m achine.
