Its powers are wholly derived from legis lation. It possesses them for the con venience o f business at the sufferance o f the public. Its stock is widely owned, passes from hand to hand, brings multitudes o f men into its shifting partnerships and connects it with the interests and the investments o f whole communities. FOR RHEUMATISM. NEURALGIA, SPRAINS. BRUISES OR ART PAIN. Uncle Sam'* Restaurant. I f y< u visit the Isthmus o f Fanama you will eat at a government table. Not content with managing the transportation, not satisfied with be- in ; a landlord, the Isthmian Canal commission has become a restaurant keeper, waiter and cook. Here is a statement o f the lenp'h to which this heretical tendency has been carried. The cost o f running the messes for “ gold,” European and negro employes during the six months ending Decem ber 31, 1909, was over $700,000, and the rectipts and expenditures practi cally balanced. It is an eloquent tribute to the gov ernment's cuisine that 3,375 o f the 4,- 800 European laborers— who are free to eat where they w ill— prefer the mess-halls to anything which “ indi vidual initiative” has to offer. There are three “ dub” messes run by unmarried white men in opposition to the commission hotels. Perhaps a hundred canal employes use them. But in spite o f the large income from the "b a r ” these private messes are more expensive and very little better than the government’s meals. No private contractor in the world feeds his employes as well as the Isth mian Canal commission. There are very few o f the employes who ever ate better meals, slept in cleaner, more comfortable beds, or amused themselves in more wholesome clubs than those furnished by the govern ment.— Success Magazine.
