A steam heating plant had been in

“ Dr. Soandso,” he inquired, his

Corporations Belong to Public.
Governor Wilson, in his Indianapolis
address, made
moat emphatic the
point that the corporations have none
o f the rights o f private individuals
and must be treated solely as the pub
lic welfare 'demands:
" A modern joint stock corporation
cannot in any proper sense be said to
base its rights and powers upon the
principles o f private property. Its
powers are wholly derived from legis
lation. It possesses them for the con
venience o f business at the sufferance
o f the public.
Its stock is widely
owned, passes from hand to hand,
brings multitudes o f men into its
shifting partnerships and connects it
with the interests and the investments
o f whole communities.
It is a seg
ment o f the public; bears no analogy
to a partnership or to the processes by
which private property is safeguarded
and managed, and should not be suf
fered to afford any covert whatever to
those who are managing it. Its man
agement is o f public and general con
cern, ia in a very proper sense every
body’! business.— Success Magazine.

Omaha— Seven persons were killed

Pacific passenger train No. 105, north
bound, en route for this city, and a
fast freight train.
The wreck, which occurred at Fort
Crook, ten'm iles south o f here, is be
lieved to have resulted from a misun

the freight crew.
A passenger train
due to leave this city for the South
about the time o f the accident^ was
converted into a relief train and sent
to the scene o f the accident, and later
returned here with the uninjured and
several o f those who were slightly in

way. Those more seriously injured

orders in regard to No. 105, but he
whistled and slackened speed. When
the passenger did not answer he con

Burlington tracks.
When within a few car lengths o f

Uncle Sam'* Restaurant.
I f y< u visit the Isthmus o f Fanama
you will eat at a government table.
Not content with managing the
transportation, not satisfied with be-
in ; a landlord, the Isthmian Canal
commission has become a restaurant
keeper, waiter and cook.
Here is a statement o f the lenp'h to
which this heretical tendency has been
carried.
The cost o f running the messes for
“ gold,” European and negro employes
during the six months ending Decem
ber 31, 1909, was over $700,000, and
the rectipts and expenditures practi
cally balanced.
It is an eloquent tribute to the gov
ernment's cuisine that 3,375 o f the 4,-
800 European laborers— who are free
to eat where they w ill— prefer the
mess-halls to anything which “ indi
vidual
initiative”
has
to offer.
There are three “ dub” messes run by
unmarried white men in opposition to
the commission hotels.
Perhaps a
hundred canal employes use them.
But in spite o f the large income from
the "b a r ” these private messes are
more expensive and very little better
than the government’s meals.
No private contractor in the world
feeds his employes as well as the Isth
mian Canal commission.
There are
very few o f the employes who ever
ate better meals, slept in cleaner,
more comfortable beds, or amused
themselves in more wholesome clubs
than those furnished by the govern
ment.— Success Magazine.

He Might Have Earned a Vote.
Little Johnnie stood gazing solemnly
on the decrepit form of an old coun
tryman. Noticing the boy’s attention
the old man asked: “ Well, what is
it, son?”
“ S a y," the inquisitive youngster
asked, “ did the politicians kiss you
when you was a baby?” — Success

The Rural Uplift.
“ Has your family been o f much as
sistance to you in running the place?’ *
“ I should say so,” replied Farmer
ComtosBel.
“ Food has been so high
that the summer board season would
have been a failure i f it hadn’t been
for mother and our son Josh.”
“ They saved the expenses o f help?”
“ No, sir; but Josh is a right good
hand in a poker game, an' the way
mother picked up bridge was some
thin’ amazin’. ” — Washington Star.
