But that 97 degrees was as the gentle warmth of a day in spring, compared to the heat in other towns in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. In 11 cities that had been heard from last night, the thermometer stood above 100 degrees. Eltopia, a little water tank station in Central Washington, near Pasco, was perhaps the hottest place in the United States, the mercury climbing to 110 degrees.
