IK LEXINGTON TOATFIEID PublisHed Every Thursday at LEXINGTON, OREGON S. A. THOMAS, Editor and Proprietor. OFFICIAL PAPER TOWN OF LEXINGTON Subscription,' per year, - " $1.00 Advertising rates on Application Entered as second-class matter October 6, 1905, at the post office at Lexington, Or egon, under the Act cf Congress of March 3, 1879. - THURSDAY MARCH 29, 1906. The liquor traffic question will be up for the consideration of the people at the June election and we believe that an error is being made in attempt ing to regulate the business by closing the saloon. V(e believe that it would be much better to license a saloon and control it than have liquor shipped into the community in jugs and passed a round indiscriminately. If prohibition or local option would prohibit, it would be different, but you cannot stop the use of it by prohibiting the sale of it in a .few small towns. We are oi the opinion that city council should, if they j have the power, prohibit the use of ; screens, curtains, blinds or painted windows in the front of the bar-room. Some who now frequent saloons would not care to have their wives, children, mother, sister or sweetheart see them at the bar. The average saloon man is not as black as he is painted, we do not know of any who would make any 'objection to such an arrangement, they all seem to take pride in conducting a quiet orderly house. Another thing -we believe is that churches and kindred societies should unite in establishing and maintaining a public rest room, where all classes may be made to feel at home, where the farmer and his family may go for a short rest before starting home, or a place to leave wraps and bundles while they are shop ping. Take the money that is now being used to fight the saloon and use it to fit up and maintain a place that will be more attractive to the young man than the saloon, make the church more homelike, have it well lit and as comfortable as possible. The Wheat field Is open for discussion on this question and believes that the p'eople desire mere light on the subject. Walter 0. Hill, Republican candi date for nomination as County Clerk, was a resident of Lexington before receiving the appointment as Deputy Sheriff of Morrow county. He has resided in Morrow county twenty-two years, is a young man of strictly temp erate habits and has a good business education The position he has held for the past four years has enabled him to become well acquainted with the duties of the County Clerk and he is in ever way qualified to take charge of the Clerk's office. Last Sundays' Journal contained an article from Heppner, stating that A. K. Fuller was the saloonmens' candl date for Sheriff. Mr Fuller said at the time he announced himself that he would enforce the laws impartially. The Wheatfield makes this statement to correct the error made by the Hep pner correspondent of The Journal.
